Problem (Simple Curves)
The angle of intersection of a circular curve is 45° 30' and its radius is 198.17 m. PC is at Sta. 0 +
700. Compute the right angle offset from Sta. 0 + 736.58 on the curve to tangent through PC.
Length of curve from PC to A:
s=736.58−700
s=36.58 m

Angle subtended by arc s from the center of the curve:

Problems (Compound Curve)
A compound curve has the following characteristics:
I1 = 24° D1 = 6°
I2 = 36° D2 = 4°
Stationing of P.C. = km 10 + 420
Compute the stationing of P.C.C.

Problem (Reversed Curve)

A reversed curve with diverging tangent is to be designed to connect to three traversed lines
for the portion of the proposed highway. The lines AB is 185 m, BC is 122.40 m, and CD is 285
m. The azimuth are Due East, 242°, and 302° respectively. The following are the cost index and
specification:
Type of Pavement = Item 311 (Portland Cement Concrete Pavement)
Number of Lanes = Two Lanes
Width of Pavement = 3.05 m per lane
Thickness of Pavement = 280 mm
Unit Cost = P1,800 per square meter
It is necessary that the PRC (Point of Reversed Curvature) must be one-fourth the distance BC
from B.
Find the radius of the first curve.

Problem (Symmetrical)
A grade of -4.2% grade intersects a grade of +3.0% at Station 11 + 488.00 of elevations 20.80
meters. These two center gradelines are to be connected by a 260 meter vertical parabolic
curve.
From the grade diagram:

S1=151.67 m

Problem (Symmetrical)
A grade line AB having a slope of +5% intersect another grade line BC having a slope of –3% at
B. The elevations of points A, B and C are 95 m, 100 m and 97 m respectively. Determine the
elevation of the summit of the 100 m parabolic vertical curve to connect the grade lines.
Horizontal distance between A and B = (100 - 95)/0.05 = 100 m
Horizontal distance between B and C = (100 - 97)/0.03 = 100 m

The figure above placed the parabolic curve at the middle-half:

Distance from PC to the summit:
S10.05=1000.08S10.05=1000.08

Elevation of the summit:

summit=97.5+12(62.5)(0.05)
Elevation of the summit=99.0625 mElevation of the summit=99.0625 m
Problem (Unsymmetrical)
An unsymmetrical parabolic curve has a forward tangent of -8% and a back tangent of +5%.
Locate the position of
the highest point on the summit and its’ distance from the PT. The vertical curve has a length of
40m on the side of
the PC and 60m from the PT. The PC is at station (6+780) and has an elevation of 110m.
Given:
g1=5%
g2=-8%
L1=40m
L2=60m
Sta. PC (6+780); 110m
Problem (SSD)
A bus is running at a speed of 20mph downhill on a grade of -2%. The coefficient of friction
between the
road surface and the tire is 0.34. After suddenly applying full brakes, how far the bus travels
until it stops?
Given:
V=20mph
G = -2%
F=0.34
Problem (SSD Underpass)
At a certain underpass, the height of a driver’s eye on a 240m sag parabolic curve at the instant
when the perception reaction time of 2seconds is 1.15m while the height of the object above
the pavement is 1.1m, The back tangent grade is -3% meeting the forward tangent at station
(12+100) elevation 300m. If the length of the sight distance is 320m, determine the grade of the
forward tangent.
Given:
g1=-3%
h1=1.15m
h2=1.1m
S=320m
L=240m
Hc=4.25m
Sta. V (12+100) ; elev. 300m
Solve for g2
S(320)>L(240), use formula for L equals to: L = 2S − 800H/A
L = 2S −800H/A
Solve for H

H = Hc – (h1 + h2)/2
H = 4.25 – (1.15 + 1.1)/2 = 4.225m

240 = 2(320) −800(4.225)/(g1 + g2)

240 = 2(320) − 800(4.225)/(3% + g2)
g2 = 8.42%
