Research Design: Mixed Method

This document discusses mixed methods research, which combines qualitative and quantitative research approaches. It defines mixed methods as combining the two approaches in a single study to gain a better understanding than a single method could provide. The document classifies mixed method designs and discusses purposes for using a mixed methods approach, including triangulation, complementarity, gaining a total understanding, initiation of new questions, and research expansion. It also outlines several mixed methods research designs and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of mixed methods research.

A. DEFINING MIXED METHODS RESEARCH
Mixed method is kind of study that on the research process is combining the both
quantitative and qualitative research in a one case, Mixed methods research combines
quantitative and qualitative research methods in different ways, with each approach adding
something to the understanding of the phenomenon. If mixing methods offers a better
understanding of the research problem than a single method design, then it is worth considering
B. CLASSIFYING MIXED METHODS

In the research field, there is continuing discussion regarding clarification of mixed

methods research in relationship to monomethod research, multimethod research, and mixed
model research. In a monomethod research design, one method, either qualitative or
quantitative, with corresponding data collection, analysis, and accompanying procedures, is used
to answer the research question. Multimethod research employs different types of data
collecting methods. mixed model research, in which mixing of qualitative and quantitative
approaches occurs in all stages of a study (formulation of the research questions, data collection
procedures and research method, interpretation of the results, and final inferences) or across
stages of a study.
C. PURPOSES FOR CONDUCTING MIXED METHODS RESEARCH
1. Triangulation Method

The triangulation method be the most common reason why researcher incorporate mixed
method to their research, the researcher looking for the convergence data to increase their
findings credibility by gathering with all the method in the research. in the end triangulation
strengthen and enrich study conclusion, also means that make this mixed method become more
acceptable.

2. Complementary

The second reason is mixed method is a complementary that make the researchers are
enable to gain more knowledge of the research problem, and also enable researcher to clarify a
given research result

3. Total Understanding
The third is mixed method helps the researcher to have total understanding of the
research problem, how? by creating a synergistic effect which that the results from one method
help to develop the other method.

4. Initiation

The fourth reason is the initiation, the initiation in this case means that commonly, the
research finding rises question and contradiction so that initiate a new study, with expectations it
will add new insights because it might be can reveals a truly new research topic and generate
new study.

5. Expansion

The last is expansion, it is intended to expand the range of the research, so it will be born
detailed findings that helps researchers in a future to use various method to gain new research
question.

D. MIXED METHODS DESIGNS

Concurrent Design
Is both qualitative and quantitative data are collected separately but at approximately the same
time
Concurrent Triangulation
Is occurs when quantitative and qualitative data are collected and analyzed separately but at the
same time, with the findings converging in the conclusions in order to answer an overarching
research question
Parallel Design
Is those in which data are collected and analyzed separately, similar to concurrent designs
Sequential Design
Is data that are collected and examined in one stage inform the data collected in the next phase
Fully Mixed Design
Or fully integrated designs involve mixing of the qualitative and quantitative approaches in an
interactive way throughout the study
Conversion Design
Is involve transforming data, which means that data collected in one form (e.g., numbers or text)
are converted to a different form and then analyzed
Embedded Design
Is one form of data supports a second form of data within a single study.
E. ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE MIXED METHOD
Mixed method research born a more complete understanding of the case, and there are more
advantages about mixed method but also, there is some disadvantages;
Advantages

a. makes the relationship that found between two variables are more clear

b. the researcher’s area of exploration about relationships between variables become

bigger, deeper and larger

c. validates the cross relationships that discovered between variables

Disadvantages

a. it took a long time in using mixed method study

b. not every researcher, master both of quantitative and qualitative research

c. Expensive, it is cost more money than conduct just only qualitative or just quantitative

research
