There are 5 stages of KM implementation at BPK RI: 1) Awareness stage, 2) Exploration and development stage, 3) Expansion and support stage, and 4) Institutionalization of KM stage. APQC’s Knowledge Management Implementation Statement
Stage 1: Get Started
1. Knowledge management has emerged as a topic of interest in your organization
2. At least a few employees have explored the benefits of KM for your organization
3. Someone has had a personal stake in developing interest in KM
4. You or other members of the organization have learned about KM through participation
in consortia or conferences
5. The organization has created a high-level rationale or vision for pursuing KM.

Stage 2: Develop Strategy


1. Your organization has established a KM exploratory group or steering committee for KM.
2. An executive sponsor in your organization supports further exploration of KM.
3. You are looking for successful, internal grassroots efforts already under way.
4. Your IT organization is interested in actively supporting KM initiatives.
5. You have stories of how knowledge sharing has helped your organization in the past.
6. You have identified pilots that allow you to demonstrate how KM will benefit your org.
7. You have secured ownership, funding, and buy-in for pilots.

Stage 3: Design and Launch KM Initiatives


1. Your organization has designed a pilot and implementation strategies.
2. You have launched communities of practice, an interactive KM Intranet site, or some
other pilot initiative.
3. You have enlisted and trained pilot facilitators and leaders.
4. You have established pilot measures and indicators and developed a system for tracking
and reporting results.
5. You have created strategies for learning from your KM initiatives.
6. You have mapped out strategies for expanding your pilot initiatives across the company.

Stage 5: Institutionalize Knowledge Management


1. KM is directly linked to your business model
2. KM initiatives are widely deployed throughout your organization.
3. All your managers and employees are trained to use your KM technologies.
4. You methodically assess your KM strategy, identify gaps & outline methods to fill the
gaps.
5. You have a formal support structure in place to maintain KM
6. You have rewards programs in alignment with your KM strategy.
7. Sharing knowledge is now the norm in your organization.
