I glanced over to my left. The clock had under two seconds on it. I lunged as the buzzer
went off. I had made a point with less than a third of a second remaining. The score was now
4-5. I got back into position and the rest of the time I had went away before I could take a single
step. I felt my stomach drop while staring at the score. As I saw the other team cheer, I felt
dejected as I walked off the fencing strip and back to the rest of my team. As the rest of my
team consoled me, I realized there was only one thing I could do: practice more.
Fencing has been one of my favorite activities since middle school. It has allowed me to
make many new friends and taught me many things I didn’t think a sport could. Despite never
having won the title before, my team won state championships two years in a row, showing me
the value of perseverance. Training together, but fencing on the strip alone, allowed me to learn
to rely on my teammates for support but be self-sufficient at the same time. Fencing gave me
the drive to keep working toward something despite failure. It taught me how to take both loss
and victory in stride, knowing that I always have room to improve.
What started as a way to kill time on weekends became a hobby. I started learning about the inner
workings of the game, discovering how mods or custom extensions for the game were programmed. I
went from trying to set up a Minecraft server, to learning how to configure Linux to teaching myself
programming before the end of middle school.
By high school, in line with the school motto “A man for others”, programming had become a tool for me
to help others. I designed a homepage for my school’s Chromebooks to help students find school websites
more efficiently. I’ve also designed and developed programs to be used by the larger community,
including publishing an open-source program on GitHub that enabled new members to the data-archival
community for large scale data archival. Coming from a Jesuit educational background, I have always
been taught to strive for the “Magis”, which means more or greater in Latin. My experience through the
many retreats and activities at my school has shown me that I need to always strive to be greater than I am
now. I am constantly trying to find ways to improve my skills in different subjects, whether that be
teaching myself cybersecurity, obtaining a SANS/GIAC certificate or building programs that make school
easier for my classmates. I also run the school’s hack club, which introduces students to programming
through various projects and activities.
To me, education means the freedom to be able to dive deep into my interests and explore different
opportunities through hands-on projects and mentor-led research. I believe that Georgetown has the right
ecosystem to pursue my interest in computer science, cybersecurity, and privacy. I have organized and
participated in hackathons conducted in my high school but Georgetown’s Hoya Hacks takes it to a
completely different level. I can see myself plunge into this and work on it for 36 hours with little sleep. I
also feel that there is plenty of opportunities for undergrad research at the Security Lab. The list of
projects is very exciting, especially the DeDos, HoneyMail and HoneyProxy and EmulaTor. I have
tinkered in all these fields through personal projects and would love to acquire expertise with guidance
from the professors and my seniors. Participation in the numerous computer science related clubs and
meetups like Coding Studio would provide an opportunity to apply and reinforce what I learned in class. I
am also interested in pursuing the accelerated MS after I am done with my undergrad.
Over the summer of my junior year, I interned at Simplify VMS. Being in the same work environment as
other developers gave me insight into what working as a developer in the future would look like.
Challenging myself with these larger coding projects and working with other programmers reaffirmed my
love of computer science.
At school, I try to spread my attitude to strive for more and, at Georgetown University, I can do the same
by setting an example for my peers. Just like in high school, I can continue to contribute to the student
body like GuWeCode, and other clubs whether that is through teaching them computer science skills or
working on open-source projects that benefit everyone.
