As my interest in Computer Science, that started in fifth grade progressed, I learned about other
aspects of computer science such as cyber security.
I was first exposed to the field of cybersecurity during my sophomore year in high school while
researching how exploits and viruses were created. I used multiple open source tools to create
payloads and lost countless hours tinkering with different settings. I read numerous websites and
articles to make my program undetectable by most antivirus software, and increase its efficacy. As
my interest in the field grew, my uncle suggested I test my knowledge by taking the GIAC SEC401
exam, the gold standard for certifications in the cybersecurity world.
To prepare for the exam, I went to a boot camp conducted by the SANS Institute, where I was
surrounded by people twice my age. Through the week long course, I got first-hand accounts of the
lives of those working in the field. The experience of being in a class and learning about the subject
was an immediate contrast to my self-teaching experience.
I am also a privacy advocate and have dedicated time to running tor servers, snowflake bridges,
setting up VPN servers, doing DNS level tracker and ad-blocking, and spend a lot of time reading
upon best practices around privacy and information security.

I glanced over to my left. The clock had under two seconds on it. I lunged as the buzzer
went off. I had made a point with less than a third of a second remaining. The score was now
4-5. I got back into position and the rest of the time I had went away before I could take a single
step. I felt my stomach drop while staring at the score. As I saw the other team cheer, I felt
dejected as I walked off the fencing strip and back to the rest of my team. As the rest of my
team consoled me, I realized there was only one thing I could do: practice more.
Fencing has been one of my favorite activities since middle school. It has allowed me to
make many new friends and taught me many things I didn’t think a sport could. Despite never
having won the title before, my team won state championships two years in a row, showing me
the value of perseverance. Training together, but fencing on the strip alone, allowed me to learn
to rely on my teammates for support but be self-sufficient at the same time. Fencing gave me
the drive to keep working toward something despite failure. It taught me how to take both loss
and victory in stride, knowing that I always have room to improve.

My favorite philosopher, Epictetus, once wrote that you should see objects for what they
are, temporary, and that if your favorite cup were to break, to regard it as just another broken
cup. Epictetus is wrong.
When I was in 8th grade, I started going through a few months worth of saved
bookmarks relating to making a hackintosh (a mac built on PC hardware). I was shocked that
the majority of the links now lead nowhere. I had lost months of important information that I
would likely never find it again.
Epictetus would have said that I should have viewed the links as something temporary.
He would suggest I act like a stoic who had just lost their favorite car: indifferent. Instead, I felt
like a non-stoic when they realize they’ve lost their keys.
This panic over losing what was months of research drove me to start backing up related
forums and other media I thought was at risk of being removed. Soon, I discovered the data
archival community and got involved in projects backing up social media platforms, websites,
and books.
Assimilating into the culture of data sharing, I began to archive things for the sole
purpose of distributing the data once it was no longer available. To give back to the community
that had taught me the basics, I also began developing an open source program called “The
Ultimate Archiver Tool” to help newcomers. I often teach novices the basics of making backups,
archiving websites, and peer to peer file sharing.
Data archival is not just downloading everything on a website. I see it like metal ore
processing. Just as metal ore needs to be refined, data needs to be curated. This often involves
writing scripts to sort through files, modifying tools to “scrape” (keep) parts of sites, and packing
it in as small a file as possible for distribution.
For sorting through such large amounts of data, I often have to adapt and modify
programs to do the heavy lifting for me. For my meme archive, for example, I retrained Google’s
image classification AI to use its existing model for classifying different memes. Also, when
indexing large sites, I have to make my own python scripts to scrape the relevant data.
Epictetus also wrote, “It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already
knows.” This time, he’s right. I used to think I knew a lot about computer science and cyber
security until I began archiving material on it. Once confronted with gigabytes of information I did
not know, I realized how much more there was left to learn.
While data hoarders reject Epictetus’ view on data being temporary, they also accept it.
Within the community, data with less than 3 copies is considered “leased” rather than owned.
Even with 3 copies, however, data isn’t safe, as it only takes a natural disaster to lose all of your
drives. Despite our reluctance, a part of every archivist still agrees with Epictetus.
The Streisand effect states that when information is censored, it causes the unintended
effect of further publicizing that information. However, history has shown that governments are
able to censor information effectively, often being able to hide entire operations from the public
view. More often than not, information is covertly censored or removed, without it being
distributed by the public. Without keeping permanent records, past information on the internet is
easily lost and censored. The only solution to covert censorship is keeping permanent and
decentralized records of information. Archivists take this task upon ourselves, making copies
and distributing data which is actively being scrubbed from the internet. Already, I have archived
multiple forums used by people all around the world which were faced with censorship, with
these archives receiving upwards of 3,000 downloads. I hope to continue to fight online
censorship through data archival and preserve digital history.

My first memory of my friend Jack is asking him, “Have you ever played Minecraft?” back in fifth grade.
Since then, Minecraft has been a large part of my life. It enveloped my friendships and eventually, my
academic interests.

What started as a way to kill time on weekends became a hobby. I started learning about the inner
workings of the game, discovering how mods or custom extensions for the game were programmed. I
went from trying to set up a Minecraft server, to learning how to configure Linux to teaching myself
programming before the end of middle school.

By high school, in line with the school motto “A man for others”, programming had become a tool for me
to help others. I designed a homepage for my school’s Chromebooks to help students find school websites
more efficiently. I’ve also designed and developed programs to be used by the larger community,
including publishing an open-source program on GitHub that enabled new members to the data-archival
community for large scale data archival. Coming from a Jesuit educational background, I have always
been taught to strive for the “Magis”, which means more or greater in Latin. My experience through the
many retreats and activities at my school has shown me that I need to always strive to be greater than I am
now. I am constantly trying to find ways to improve my skills in different subjects, whether that be
teaching myself cybersecurity, obtaining a SANS/GIAC certificate or building programs that make school
easier for my classmates. I also run the school’s hack club, which introduces students to programming
through various projects and activities.

To me, education means the freedom to be able to dive deep into my interests and explore different
opportunities through hands-on projects and mentor-led research. I believe that Georgetown has the right
ecosystem to pursue my interest in computer science, cybersecurity, and privacy. I have organized and
participated in hackathons conducted in my high school but Georgetown’s Hoya Hacks takes it to a
completely different level. I can see myself plunge into this and work on it for 36 hours with little sleep. I
also feel that there is plenty of opportunities for undergrad research at the Security Lab. The list of
projects is very exciting, especially the DeDos, HoneyMail and HoneyProxy and EmulaTor. I have
tinkered in all these fields through personal projects and would love to acquire expertise with guidance
from the professors and my seniors. Participation in the numerous computer science related clubs and
meetups like Coding Studio would provide an opportunity to apply and reinforce what I learned in class. I
am also interested in pursuing the accelerated MS after I am done with my undergrad.

Over the summer of my junior year, I interned at Simplify VMS. Being in the same work environment as
other developers gave me insight into what working as a developer in the future would look like.
Challenging myself with these larger coding projects and working with other programmers reaffirmed my
love of computer science.
At school, I try to spread my attitude to strive for more and, at Georgetown University, I can do the same
by setting an example for my peers. Just like in high school, I can continue to contribute to the student
body like GuWeCode, and other clubs whether that is through teaching them computer science skills or
working on open-source projects that benefit everyone.
