Intro to intern
INTERNSHIP REFLECTION
As a high school student, I am a blessed with the opportunity to have a try at the real-
life work experience through my internship. Internship is “a period of time during which
someone works for a company or organization in order to get experience of a particular type
of work”. I choose to try interning at an event organization company called “Berlian
Entertainment”, there I work with 5 other friends. Event organizer or event management is
basically the application of project management to the creation and development of small
and/or large-scale personal or corporate events such as festivals, conferences, ceremonies,
weddings, formal parties, concerts, or conventions. It involves studying the brand, identifying
its target audience, devising the event concept, and coordinating the technical aspects before
actually launching the event. Despite being a student majoring in math and science, I have a
huge interest in events in general as I am a huge fan of going to concerts and events. My
decision in deciding to intern at an event organizer company is to broaden my horizon and
also practice my communication and leading skills. Before starting at the company, me and
my friend have searched up the company and its past events. Berlian entertainment was
established in 2009, it started out solely as an event promoter. The presence of Berlian
Entertainment in the business marked by the most anticipated outdoor rave event
Godskitchen (Armin van Buuren) in 2009, followed by the successful concert of David Foster
and Justin Bieber sold out concert in the next year which made Berlian Entertainment one of
the most talk of the town promoter in Indonesia. Berlian has widen their horizon into a lot of
things such as event consultant and pioneering in movies scoring.
As it was our first time experiencing being an intern, we were pretty nervous. It was
our breakthrough to the adult’s life and our chance to observe how the real life workplace
process goes. On our first day we were greeted by our mentor kak Manda. Kak Manda is the
secretary of Berlian entertainment, and she introduced us to the various division in the
company. We introduced ourselves one by one and on our first day we were asked to come
up with ideas for their upcoming events which is Lovefest, on that same day we were also
preparing for an event next week for billboard. We created our PPT one by one, and from the
time of research we were taught on how to fir our target audience interest. Our target
audience were the people our age, so we were asked to create a promotional event for the
upcoming festival. I came up with a playlist contest and a video contest, since I thought that
creativity equals value and it’s something with quality to do. The day goes with a bunch of
brainstorming and chatting, it was a good icebreaker with our mentor too.
The next week comes, and we knew that on that day we are supposed to help with the
billboard event. We came early just while the set is being set up. We meet with our mentor,
and she briefs us on what we’re going to do and the artist that’s coming. We were divided
into 3 different groups. Nathan and Cinta works as an LO, Jasmine and Lia as media and
press, and me and Denita as guest and invitation. We were headed to a different set of
mentors; they gave us pass and wristband that allows us access in and out of the venue. The
event is not going to start until a couple more hours, so our mentor advises us to take a bite
since it would be hard for us to leave our designated spots. We were both nervous and excited
as it is our first on hand event and we are actually partaking in it. The two-artist playing in
this event is one of our favorite, it was Kunto aji and Sal priadi. We knew that we have to
keep our professionalism, so we were not thinking of getting advantage of any sorts, but our
mentor said that if were finish with our job we could come in and join the performance.
We were busy scanning the guest and invitation list and giving out wristbands and
double checking with our mentor. We were given a break and were allowed to go backstage
to eat. After around 30 minutes of working our mentor ask us to just come in and join the
performance. We were glad that we were still able to enjoy the performance and even get
closer to the stage. We enjoyed it very much and were able to sing our hearts out to the lyrics
of the song. After the stage ended, we were going backstage to take our bags and go home but
then one of our mentors ask us if we want to take a picture with Kunto aji and we gladly says
yes. This day of intern is definitely one of the most memorable.
The next few meetings we were asked to do a bunch of stuff, mostly including making
PowerPoints and contacting medias and celebrities. This has made me improve a lot in my
listening and communicating skills (listen with my heart and mind), and there are a lot of
times where we need to figure out ways to negotiate and also create ideas to fit with the terms
where both parties are going to be happy with (be curious and find solution, think, act and
reflect). In this period of time for about 2 months, we were continuously preparing for the
upcoming company event lovefest. It was a pretty big event as it is ongoing for 2 days with a
bunch of both local and international artists. In the office there’s also another intern, which is
a college guy majoring in business, he’s older than us and his task is more into calculating
and making excels.
As months pass by it was finally time for the big event, which is lovefest. We were
once again divided to different divisions, me and Denita paired up again and is in charge of
documentation of the event. We both brought our own cameras, and were briefed by a new
mentor. He explained that he’s going to be in charge of the sponsorship shots and our task is
just to take shots of stage indoors and outdoors. This was a really fun task as we were able to
enjoy the performance while taking the shots, were even allowed to go inside the barrier to
get the shots. As we get another AA pass we were also allowed to go backstage. We came
early so we were able to just chat with everyone and prepare. On that day Mr. Taqwa also
came to see us, so we chat for a while. As the events started to start, we were getting pretty
busy with our own stuff. We get to experience being a stand in model for a couple of
sponsorship shot and also one for the festival, we find it pretty funny but did it anyway. It
was a long day but it was really fun and we got a lot of new experiences.
From interning in this place there has been a lot of new lessons and experience, we
have been growing continuously throughout our times interning in Berlian entertainment. The
skills such as communication, problem solving and creative thinking has been used a lot in
the time we were interning. Learner outcomes such as optimizing our potential, team up for a
better result, be curious and find solution and also respecting others. We need to work as a
team in order for the event to flow as planned and that also includes skills such as
communicated and leadership. Dealing with problems and unforeseen circumstances which
puts us in position to use our problem-solving skills and find solutions. And also, about being
in a situation where we are introduced to a new lot of people which puts us in the position to
always be respectful and mindful to others. This internship has taught me a lot about work
ethics and also about dealing with real life problems in general, there are a lot of experiences
worth cherishing even if I’m not going to be in this line of work in the future.
