Human-Computer Interaction - Assignment 6

This document outlines the steps for an assignment to design an interactive clock product. It includes: 1) Requirements gathered from potential users for the clock's functions, including showing the time, date, and day with an alarm. 2) Sources of inspiration like wall clocks and digital clocks to combine features. 3) Sketching initial designs that meet requirements, evaluating the designs through role playing interactions and getting user feedback. The goal is to iteratively improve the design.

Assignment 6

We have broken this assignment down into the following steps to make it clearer:(a) Think about the
interactive product you are designing: what do you want it to do I for you? Find 3-5 potential users
and ask them what they would want. Write a list of requirements for the clock, together with some
usability criteria based on the definition of usability used in Chapter 1.

A: It need to use numbers to show the time.

B: It would possible to show the date.

C: I want a watch which is able to show the day.

D: If the clock can be seen in a dark environment, that will be fine.

E: The clock must contain alarm function.

(b) Look around for similar devices and seek out other sources of inspiration that you might find
helpful. Make a note of any findings that are interesting, useful or insightful.

For me the wall clock and digital clock are the sources of inspiration of my innovative clock. I
choose to make my own clock and I combine the digital and manual clock. And for me it is helpful
because it can easily see what time is it. Even you are in the middle of the night you can easily see it.

(c) Sketch out some initial designs for the clock. Try to develop at least two distinct alternatives that
both meet your set of requirements.
(d) Evaluate the two designs, using your usability criteria and by role playing an interaction with your
sketches. Involve potential users in the evaluation, if possible. Does it do what you want? Is the time
or other information being displayed always clear? Design is iterative, so you may want to return to
earlier elements of the process before you choose one of your alternatives.

Design 1
 Does this alarm clock assist you waking up more effectively than your prior alarm?

Sure, it’s a loud little clock.

 Is the Alarm reliable?

yes.

 Are there any safety hazards you have come across? if yes, which?

If I accidentally splash water on it, it may never work again, there are tiny holes that lead directly into
the circuit board.
 Is the alarm practical?

Yes, it has the essentials.

 Is it easy to use?

Easy menu to navigate, simple settings, selecting a code input can get tricky.

Design 2

 Is the Alarm reliable?

Yes.

 Are there any safety hazards you have come across? if yes, which?

Yes, it is not built to resist falls onto hard ground.

 Is the alarm practical?
