SECTION A M OTOR ENGINEERING KNOWLEDGE

This Section contains FIVE questions

I. With reference to scavenge fires in large slow speed diesel engines, state
FOUR actions to be taken by the Engineer Officer oftlle Watch on
discovering EACH of the following:

(a) one engine unit only affected; (8)

(b) several engine units affected at the same time. (8)

2. With reference to medium speed diesel engine sketch and label a typical
arrangement for the piston and connecting rod. (8)

3. (a) Describe the tests which are carried out on a fuel injector after overhaul. (8)

(b) Sketch a section through the nozzle of a fuel injector. (8)

4. (a) State the name of the equipment used to give a warning of the presence of
conditions tbat could lead to an explosion in the crankcase of a diesel
engine. (2)

(b) Sketch and describe the device used to relieve any excess pressure that
might develop as a result of a crankcase explosion in a diesel engine. (14)

5. State FOUR circumstances under which the fuel supply to the burners of an
auxiliary boiler would be automatically cut off; giving a reason why EACH
cii-cumstance requires the fuel to be cut off. (16)

This Section contains FIVE questions

1. State EIGHT main operatjng temperatures and pressures on a main steam


propulsion plant. (16)

2. (a) Explain the function of a gland steam system for a steam turbine plant
suitable for producing the propulsive power of the vessel. (8)

(b) State bow the glands on the HP and LP turbine remain effective during
EACH of the following conditions:

(i) manoeuvring; (4)

(ii) full away. (4)

3. (a) State the cormnon name given to the fix.turns and fittings that are fitted
directly to the pressure parts of a boiler. (4)

(b) Name THREE of these fittings describing the function of EACH. (12)

4. (a) Desc1ibe the preparation of fuel oil which is carried out ooboard between
storage tank and burner. (12)

(b) Describe the possible consequences of mixing different grades of fuel oil. (4)

5. List, in a logical sequence, the checks to be carried out if an auxiliary diesel


engine fails to start. (16)

SECTIONC GENERAL ENGINEERING KNOWLEDGE
This Section contains N1NE questions, in THREE parts -Auxiliary Systems,
Electrical and Ship Construction.

Part 1 - Auxiliary Systems.


1. (a) Describe the immediate action that the Engineer Officer of the watch should
take in the event of the engine room bilge rising faster than can be contained
by the bilge pump. ( l 0)

(b) State the features provided in the engine room pumping systems to deal with
the situation in Ql (a). (6)

2. List EIGHT reasons why a bilge pump may not be able to remove water
from an engine room bilge. (16)

3. (a) State the regulations that make each ship responsible for the prevention of
pollution at sea and in port. (4)

(b) Name the equipment that must be used in machinery spaces to comply with
Annex 1 of the regulations stated in (a). (2)

(c) Describe the principle of operation of the equipment named in (b) (10)

4. Sketch an Aerobic Sewage Treatment Plant. (16)

5. State the safety checks needed before using EACH of the follow ing lifting
gear, assuming that all certificates are in order and the equipment load
capacity is sufficient for the lift:

(a) wire strops; (4)

(b) chain blocks; (4)

(c) eye bolts; (4)

(d) shackles. (4)

Part 2 - ElectricaJ.

6. State the procedure to be carried out if you found someone you suspected of
having received an electtic shock. (16)

7. Explain the procedure to be taken in EACH of the following circumstances


in order to prepare a large electrical generator set for maintenance:

(a) taking the a.c. generator off electtical load; (6)

(b) isolating the machine in order that work may be safely carried out. (10)

Part 3 - Ship Construction.

8. (a) With reference lub1icating oil or fuel oil tanks that have ventilators on the
vessels main weather deck, explain EACH of the following:

(i) the purpose of the ventilation; (4)

(ii) how ingress of sea water in bad weather is prevented; (4)

(iii) how the risk of fire entering the ventilator is reduced; (4)

(iv) how the risk of pollution is reduced. (4)

9. Describe, with the aid of a sketch , the structural features of the bow which
impart strnctural strength. (16)
