Sheet 3

This document contains 12 problems related to fluid flow in pipes. The problems involve calculating velocities, flow rates, pressures, and more for water, oil, air, and other fluids flowing through pipes of varying diameters. The problems require applying principles of fluid mechanics, such as conservation of mass and energy, to analyze flow behavior in branched pipes, siphons, and other pipe configurations.

1. A pipeline carries oil, relative density 0.86, at v = 2 m/sec through

200mm ID pipe. At another section the diameter is 60 mm, find the
velocity at this section and the mass rate of the flow kg/sec.
(Ans. 22.22 m/s, 54 kg/s)

2. Oil flows through a pipeline which contracts from 450 mm diameter at

A to 300 mm diameter at B and then forks, one branch being 150 mm
diameter discharging at C and the other branch 225 mm diameter at D.
If the velocity at A is 1.8 m/s and the velocity at D is 3.6, what will be
the discharges at C and D, and the velocities at Band C?
(Ans. 0.143 m3/s, 0.143 m3/s, 4.05 m/s, 8.1 m/s)

3. 3 kN/s of water flows steadily in a 300 mm diameter pipe, which

contracts to 200 mm. calculate the flow rate of water and the velocity of
each section. (Ans. 0.305 m3/s, 4.32 m/s, 9.72 m/s)

4. Air flows steadily in a 4 in diameter pipe. The pressure of air at the inlet
point is 100 psia and its temperature is 540°R, and in the outlet point
the pressure is 18.4 psia and the temperature is 453°R. The oulet
velocity is 1000 ft/s. calculates the inlet velocity. (Ans. 219.33 ft/s)

5. water at 50°F flows through a pipe of diameter of 0.73 in. determine:

• Minimum time taken for filling a glass bottle of volume 0.0125
ft3 if the flow is laminar. (Ans. 8.85 sec)
• Maximum time to fill the bottle if the flow is turbulent.
(Ans. 4.67 sec)
(Knowing that: µ = 2.73x10-5 lb.s/ft2, ρ = 1.94 slug/ft3)

6. A vertical pipe carrying liquid of sp. gr. 0.83 upwards from a pump
contracts gradually from 105 mm diameter to 35 mm diameter over a

length of 0.45m. A water U-tube is connected to two points 0.6 m apart

in the two section of the pipe and the head difference registered is 0.43
m. the connecting pipes to the U-tube are filled with the liquid that is
flowing. Find the rate of flow in dm3/min. Ignore losses of energy.
(Ans. 76. 356 dm3/min)

7. Water flows from a reservoir into a closed tank in which the pressure is
70 kN/m2 below atmospheric. If the water level in the reservoir is 6 m
above that in the tank, find the velocity of the water entering the tank,
neglecting friction. (Ans. 16.05)

8. Determine the direction of flow through the 0.5in diameter tube shown
in figure; the liquid specific weight is γ=50lbf/ft3 and the pipe friction
constant (k) is 5. Also find the liquid flow rate. (Ans. Upword flow,
0.037 ft3/s)

9. In a vertical pipe conveying water, pressure gages are inserted at A and

B where the diameters are 150 mm and 75 mm respectively. The point
B is 2.4m below A and when the rate of flow down the pipe is 21
dm3/sec the pressure at B is 12 kN/m2 greater than that at A. assuming
that the losses in the pipe between A and B can be expressed as kv2/2g,
where v is the velocity at A, find the value of k. (Ans. 1.37)

10. In the figure shown below, a pump draws 98% sulphuric acid from a
storage tank. The pump efficiency is 60% and the velocity in suction
line is 3ft/sec. The pump discharges through a 2in pipe to an overhead

tank. The end of the discharge pipe is 50ft above level of solution in the
feed tank. Friction losses in the entire pumping system are 10ft.
What is the brake horse power (HP) of the pump? (Ans. 2 HP)

11. Barometric pressure is 101.3kpa and vapor pressure of the water is 32.4
kpa. Calculate the elevation of end B for maximum flow rate through
this pipeline and the flow rate. (Ans. 27m, 0.146 m3/s)

12. Water flows out of tank through a siphon formed by a bent pipe ABC,
25 mm in diameter. The water in the tank is 1.5m deep and the end of
pipe A is 0.3 m above the bottom of the tank. The length of pipe AB is
vertical and is 8.7 m long, while BC is 17.4m long. The pipe discharges
into the atmospheric at C, 3 m below the bottom of the tank. Assuming
that the barometric pressure is equivalent to 10.2m of water and that the
loss of head in friction is 40v2/2g, where v is the velocity of the flow in
