Personality Dimensions in Action 32 Marks: PROF 1303 Due Week 4
1.
a) In a brief paragraph for each colour, describe the typical times (roles) in your life you
use each colour.
Blue – I find that Blue is most like me. I am often optimistic, curtious, and caring
towards others. In one instance, when I was younger, I was at my older brothers
hockey game and my mom bought me a pack of Smarties. Instead of having the
Smarties for myself, I went over to every person in the stands and offered them
some of my Smarties to share. I didn’t care if I didn’t get any by the end, I wanted
others to have what I had.
Orange – I tend to like strategic games due to this characteristic. I like games like
Uno or Monopoly, where you must create a strategy in order to win the game. Same
goes with the Escape Rooms, where you have to find the clues and solve the
mystery. The logical thinking and competitive side of me comes out and I look for the
best solution to the problem.
Gold – I have spurts of this characteristic occasionally. I get very agitated now-a-
days when people don’t abide by the rules while shopping. When I go to the grocery
store and follow the arrows down the aisles, and I see someone going the opposite
way from the direction the arrow is pointing. I often stare down at the arrows and
hope that the person gets the hint.
Green – I am often like the green characteristic whenever someone is gossiping
about another person. They could be mad at a person for doing something wrong
and I often try to look at the situation in the other persons shoes. I try to see the big
picture and understand the motives behind the other persons actions.
b) In what circumstances would you draw on the skills, talents, traits and/or qualities
from ‘Blue’, ‘Gold’, ‘Green’ and ‘Orange’.
Blue – Being a friend
Gold – At work
Green – At school
Orange – making executive decisions
c) What strengths or skills of that colour are you calling on in that role or situation?
[4 marks]
Blue – Being thoughtful, a good listener, optimistic. Always being there for them and
having their back if they need me.
Gold – being detail oriented, following rules and sticking to a strict schedule. Obeying
company guidelines.
Green – thinking logically, solving problems and learning different methods by
questioning everything.
Orange – Problem solving, resourceful, determined, decisiveness.
An example:
“Gold – as a parent, I find I have to be organized to ensure everyone gets to all of
their sports activities, appointments, and events prepared and on time.
Blue – as a friend, I am often the one to encourage, motivate and support my friends
to set goals and make good decisions that will help improve their lives.
Green – there are times when I just need quiet and space to be by myself to read or
focus on a task without any distractions. I like to do tasks independently and without
someone watching over my shoulder.
Orange – this isn’t a comfortable colour for me, but I sometimes take on an orange
personality when I travel with friends and they want to try something new and
unexpected. It stresses me to be spontaneous and to take risks, but I can do it.”

a) Explain what traits in your strongest colour energizes you or that you have the
strongest connection to.
I think that I relate to optimism the most. I like to see the upside to everything and
everyone. I am definitely generous, and a good listener.
b) What traits in your weakest colour exhausts or frustrates you (traits that are least like
you)? Provide examples.
[4 marks]
“That Really Pushes My Buttons!”
I tend to not question everything around me and try to know the meaning behind every
decision or action made. Strategic thinking is probably my downfall. For an example, my
brother is thinking of buying a truck. My mom is very much green and questioned why he
needed a truck, what was wrong with the car he has, how much is the truck going to cost,
what dealership is he getting the car from. Whereas I was happy for him for making that
decision and could see how it could benefit him working construction.
3.
a) Briefly describe the area of your work (present or past) that you enjoy the most. If
you’ve never had a job, what subjects at school did you most enjoy or sport did you
enjoy most and why? [2 marks]
When I’m at work at the photo studio that I work at, I enjoy seeing the smiling faces
of the babies and families that I get to photograph. I enjoy being able to preserve a
moment in time when they are happy and goofy with each other. I also enjoy
showing them their photos at the end and engaging them in conversation.
b) Briefly identify any connections you see between a career as an office administrator
and the strengths and preferences of your primary (strongest) colour.
The connection that I see between my strongest characteristic and the office admin
job is the human connection characteristic, working alongside coworkers and
patients and providing a positive atmosphere.
Now that you are preparing for a career as an office administrator, what traits or
characteristics, of your primary colour, do you think will help you in this career? How
and why? [4 marks]
3
I believe that being thoughtful, nurturing, and accommodating to the patients would
be good characteristics to have working in an office admin job. Being there for
people and helping them when they need it most is a strong suit of mine and I feel as
though it would be very beneficial while working in a hospital or care facility.
c) Now that you have your Personality Dimensions colour blend, in an interview, when
an interviewer asks you to share some of your strengths, what strengths, qualities or
characteristics would you share with them in response to this question? How would
you support these traits with real world examples? [3 marks]
I am creative, I can think outside the box and work towards any outcome in a positive
and imaginative manner. I like problem solving and finding a solution to any problem.
For an example, if there is someone who can’t make it into work or someone can’t
take a shift, I will be willing and able to step up and work hard to fill in that spot. If the
office supplies run out and we need paper right away, I would be on the ball to
provide the supplies that we need to keep working.
4.
a) Briefly describe any professional responsibility or situation you don’t like and identify
any connections you see between this situation/responsibility and your Personality
Dimension plaid. Why do you think you don’t like it or become frustrated? [2 marks]
Making executive decisions. I feel like I wouldn’t like the responsibility of making
executive decisions because I would empathize with the other side. I am also not the
greatest at making final decisions and tend to be very indecisive because I don’t
want to hurt anyone’s feelings.
b) Briefly describe how you respond when an interviewer asks you to share a
weakness (consider you lowest colour); now that you have completed Personality
Dimensions, what challenges or characteristics would you share with them?
Once you have indicated the weakness or challenge, how would you show that you
have strategies or skills to compensate/minimize this weakness?
[2 marks]
I would say that I am not very critical. I don’t seek out ways of improvement or point
out what went wrong in a situation. I see the positive and build on the strengths of
the situation to have a more optimistic approach to the situation.

5.
a) Briefly describe a situation in which you have experienced conflict with someone, or
experienced difficulty understanding/communicating/relating with someone within a
work/academic/team setting. [2 marks]
I once had a conflict where a customer at the photo studio came up to mem asking
for a refund on her photos. She was frustrated because her photos didn’t turn out the
way she wanted and kept demanding a refund. I expressed my empathy with her
and told her that our store policy does not allow refunds. Once the photos are sent
via email to our clients, there’s no way to provide proof that they are deleted or that
they don’t still have a copy. She was angry and upset with me for not allowing the
refund.
b) What do you think the primary colour of the person might be? [1 mark]
I would say that her colour was Orange. She was determined and quick to react.
c) Consider your response to 5b) and your own Personality Dimensions primary colour.
Using what you have learned so far about distinct personalities and other ‘colours’
needs and values (refer to the booklet in your package), identify three steps you
could take which could help to minimize the conflict between you and help to engage
the other person (reflect on their colour needs).
- Tell her the facts about the store policy
- Discuss with her the possible outcomes that could help her (ie. Offer her another
session)
- Provide her with resources such as a helpline for any other troubles she may
have.
d) Include an explanation of why, or how, these steps could be helpful. If you wish, you
may ask for ideas or advice from a peer or classmate who has identified as the same
primary colour as the person you indicated in 5b. [4 marks]
Telling her the facts will help her better understand the procedures of my workplace.
Discussing with her the possible outcomes will give her different sources to choose
from and allows for fallbacks just incase a outcome doesn’t work. The helpline will
allow her to gather more information that I as an employee can not provide.

6. What is your biggest take away from participating in the Personality Dimensions
activities this week during class? [1 mark]
The biggest takeaway that I found out about myself is that I am more Green (Inquiring)
than I thought. In the section of the tally sheet, Blue came first (Authentic), but Orange
(Resourceful) and Green tied. It wasn’t until the final scoring that the Green got pushed
back.
7. Save your document as Personality Dimensions – First Name Last Name [1 mark]
Assignments are to be submitted on the due date as specified on the assignment sheet
and/or as given in class. As in the workplace, failure to meet deadlines has consequences.
Reconsideration will be given at the discretion of the professor if proper notification and
documentation is given. Students will not be allowed to do extra assignments to bring up
their mark at the end of term - students must complete and hand in term work as it is
assigned. Late assignments will be assessed a 20% penalty for up to two days. After two
days a grade of zero will be assigned.
