ACTIVITY SHEET IN GENERAL PHYSICS I

1st Quarter, Week 7 - (Relate the momentum, impulse,
force, and time of contact in a system)
ACTIVITY 1

Consider a collision of a tennis ball with a wall. Depending on the physical

properties of the ball and wall, the speed at which the ball rebounds from the wall
upon colliding with it will vary. The diagrams below depict the changes in velocity
of the same ball. For each representation (vector diagram, velocity-time graph,
and ticker tape pattern), indicate which case (A or B) has the greatest change in
velocity, greatest acceleration, greatest momentum change, and greatest
impulse. Support each answer.

ACTIVITY 2

To compare the two type of collisions, do this activity. In this activity, you will
observe an elastic collision by sliding an ice cube into another ice cube on a
smooth surface, so that a negligible amount of energy is converted to heat.

TITLE: ICE CUBES AND ELASTIC COLLISIONS

Materials:
Several ice cubes (The ice must be in the form of cubes.)
A smooth surface

Procedure:
• Find a few ice cubes that are about the same size and a smooth kitchen tabletop
or a table with a glass top.
• Place the ice cubes on the surface several centimeters away from each other.
• Flick one ice cube toward a stationary ice cube and observe the path and
velocities of the ice cubes after the collision. Try to avoid edge-on collisions and
collisions with rotating ice cubes.
• Explain the speeds and directions of the ice cubes using momentum.

Grasp Check
Was the collision elastic or inelastic?
➢ perfectly elastic
➢ perfectly inelastic
➢ Nearly perfect elastic
➢ Nearly perfect inelastic

travelling at 3 ms-1 .
Assuming that there are no external forces acting on the system, what are the
velocities of the two masses after impact?
