paraffin at approximately 392°F (200%), and shall have a cross
tection of 4 by 1.0 in: (13 by 25 mm] and a convenient length
‘of shout 6 in, (150 mm). The tamping face of the tarmper shell
‘be flat and at right angles to the length of the taroper
‘53 Tamping Rod—The tamping rod shall be a straight ste!
sod % in. (10 run} in diameter and not less than 10 in. (250
rani) in Jengsh, having atleast, the tamping end founded to a
i tip of the same diameter. -
54 Drying Room and Controls—A trynig room, with svit-
thle racks shall be provided for storing spocimens in air. The
racks shall be designed for free eiralation of air around
speciaeas, exoopt for necessary supports, and shall be so
sisted with respect to the nearest wll or other obstrocion
that air circalaton is not restricied in the intervening space.
‘The sapports shall be horizontal and shall consist of two
onabsorpive members not deeper than 1. in. (25.sam] and
taving a bearing area of not more than Yin. [6-cur] in wide.
(Conditioned sr shall be circulated ino and out of the room in
‘uniform manner so that the specified rate of evaporation is
‘snsined adjacent to all specimens.
‘5.1 The alr in toe room shall be maintained at a tempera-
ture of 73 = 3°F (23. 2°C] and a relative humidity of 50
‘4%. The aft movernent past all specimens sbal be such that
tbe rate of evepocation le 77 + 30 mL/24 b from an etmomeier
or 13 5 mL24 h from a 400-mL Grif low-form beaker
filed ce % in. [20 mm] from the top. The temperature and
retive bumidity of the air inthe room shall be measured with
either a sling of Assmame psychrometer at least twice cach
working day, The paychrometer shall comply with Test Method
E337, eqcept that thermometers baving an over-all length of
10 in. {250 mm) and marked in subdivisions of 0.5°F [0.25°C]
cam be used. The’ rooms shall be equipped. with ameans of
reaturing and’ fecarding wet- and dry-bulb temperanares
continooosly. Correction factors as indicated by. tbe aling or
‘Assmann psychrometer shall be applied to the recorded data,
‘Ths mic of evaporation within the room shall be determined
daily by the use of the sumometer of by the loss of mass of
‘water from a 400-mL. Grif low-form beaks filed initially to
2%, (20 mun] from the vop.
‘55 Atmometer—The atmometer shall be constructed a
shown in Fig. ae
S'.1, Mounting—Fig. 2 shaws a-suggestod arrangersent for
cperaling tbe atmometer. Punch # central hole ¥4 in. [13 mr)
in diameter in a filter paper, place it on the atmometer, and
secure i in place while dry, by toring the torque handle orly,
‘nti it just stars to slip. Moun the atmometer on a stand wit
the fiker paper in a borizontal position. Mount a 100-ml. glass
so thatthe 100-mL mack is from 1 to 3 in. (25 t0 75
rm] below tke level of the filter paper. Stopper the graduate so
that enzance is provided for two short glass tubes not extend
ing to the water level and one long tube extending 10 the
bottom ofthe graduate. Connect the glass tubing leading from
the bottom of the graduate to the inlet of the atmomelet by
‘means of clear plastic tubing.
‘35.2 Operation—Uée clear plastic tubing to connect &
squeeze bottle containing distiled or deionized water 10 ove of
the short glass tubes into the graduate, Force water into the
graduate until itis about half full and then close the remaining
{lass tube into the graduare. Continue to force water through
the graduate into the stmometer until the Alter paper is
saturated and there are no air bubbles in the system. Open the
‘glass mabe into the graduate and release pressure onthe squeeze
boats gradually to avoid trapping air i the tube leading to the
amometer. Adjust the level of war in the graduaie 10
approximately the 100-mL. marks Ifthe wtmonmeter is to be used
‘under variable temperature conditions, disconnect the squeeze
‘onle after filing the graduate to avoid the possibility of
additional water being forced into the graduate, Permit evapo-
tation of water from the filter paper for 1h before recording the
time and initial reading of the graduate, This waiting period
may be omited during subsequent use of the atmometer
‘provided the filter paper does not become dry. Change the filter
‘paper whenever it shows signs of contamination but not tess
frequently than onée every two weeks.
‘3.6 Filter Paper—The filter paper to-be used with the
sumomieter shal be white with a smooth surface vexture, I shall
‘be 6 in. (152 mum) in diameter and 0.050 + 0.003 in. (1.27 =
0.08 mm) thick and shall have a cotton fiber content of not less
than 75 weight %, The density shall be botween 0.400 and
0.425 glcr?, Tho Mollen barsting strength shall not be less
‘han 50 psi (345 KPa}.

‘5.7 Apparatus for Demolding Specimens—An sppararis for
demolding ‘specimens molded'in double niolds may be con-
structed a detailed in Fig 3 otto a different design that serves
the same purpose. When this device is to be used, the center
sde plate ofthe double mold must be riled and
tapped to moeive the 8-32 by 44 in. [4.50.74 IMC by 16 mm}
machine screw of the demolding thamb serew. Fig. 4 shows the
details of an epparatns for demolding specimens mokied in
single molds.
