Boundary Column Fire Design Example

This document provides calculations for the design forces on a boundary column in a single-bay portal frame structure with a span of 25m and height of 6m at a roof pitch of 12 degrees. It calculates the plastic moments of resistance for the rafter and stanchion sections, assumed to be UB 457x152x52 and UB 457x191x67 respectively. Loading calculations determine the vertical and horizontal reaction forces on the column of 49.2kN and 36.9kN. The overturning moment on the column is calculated as 350.8kNm. Design checks are made against standards in SCI P313.

PORTAL FRAME BOUNDARY COLUMN DESIGN FOR FIRE

CALCULATION OF DESIGN FORCES

Single-bay portal frame data
;; Span of frame; L = 25000 mm; Stanchion section; ;Try UB 457x191x67
Height to eaves; h = 6000 mm; Rafter section; ;Try UB 457x152x52
; Roof pitch;  = 12.0 deg ; Span to height ratio; L/h = 4.17

Plastic moments of resistance for rafter and stanchion

;; Design strengths; pyR = 275 N/mm2 ; pyS = 275 N/mm2
;; Plastic moments of resistance; MpR = pyR  SxxR = 301.4 kNm
MpS = pyS  SxxS = 404.5 kNm

Loading calculations
;;; Dead load on plan at collapse; gk = sum( gk1, gk2, gk3 ) = 0.45 kN/m2
;;; Frame centres; s = 6000 mm
Self weight of rafters; sw = 0.5 kN/m;
Rafter load per unit length (unfactored); w = gk  s + sw = 3.2 kN/m
; Weight of wall supported; wwall = 1.5 kN/m
; Vertical reaction; VR = w  L / 2 + wwall  s = 49.2 kN
; Roof pitch (0 if flat roof);  = 12.0 deg
; Length of haunch at eaves; Lh = 2500 mm
Distance between ends of haunches; G = L - 2  Lh = 20000 mm
Vertical height at end of haunch; Y = h + Lh  sin() = 6520 mm
Ratio; L_upon_h = L / h = 4.17
From SCI P313 Table 2.2 (a).tbl; A = 0.76 ; C = 0.79
Multiplication factor; k = 1.0
; Horizontal reaction; HR1 = k  ( w  G  A - C  MpR / G ) = 36.9 kN
; HR2 = MpS /( 10  Y ) = 6.2 kN
HR = max( HR1, HR2 ) = 36.9 kN
Factor B; B = ( L2 - G2 ) / ( 8  G ) = 1406 mm
Overturning moment; Mx1 = k  (w  G  Y  (A + B/Y) - MpR  (C  Y/G - 0.065)) = 350.8 kNm
Mx2 = MpS / 10 = 40.5 kNm
Mx = max( Mx1, Mx2 ) = 350.8 kNm
