Chem Lab 2

The document describes an acid-base titration experiment to determine the molar concentration and mass concentration of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) by titrating it with a known concentration of hydrochloric acid (HCl). 25.0 cm3 of NaOH solution was titrated with 0.1 M HCl using phenolphthalein indicator. The average titration volume was calculated to be 23.3 cm3. Using the mole ratio between HCl and NaOH in the balanced equation, the number of moles of NaOH was determined to be equal to the number of moles of HCl used in the titration.

Title: Acid-Base Titration

Aim: To determine the molar concentration and mass concentration of sodium hydroxide by titration
with 0.1 moldm-3 hydrochloric acid.

Apparatus: 25.0cm3 pipette, 50.00 cm3 burette, 250 cm3 conical flasks, 100cm3 beaker, filter funnel,
pipette dropper, retort stand, clamp, white tile, water bottle.

Materials: 0.1 moldm-3 HCL, NaOH, phenolphthalein, distilled water

Procedure: A volumetric pipette was used to add 25.0 cm 3 of HCl solution to a conical flask. 1-3 drops of
phenolphthalein indicator was then added to the conical flask. A 50.0 cm 3 burette was filled with the
0.1m HCl solution and the initial reading of the burette was recorded. The 0.1 m HCl solution was added
gradually to the NaOH solution in the conical flask until the color of the indicator changed from pink to
colorless. The final reading of the burette was noted. The procedure was repeated twice and a total of
three readings were collected. The average volume of the HCl used in the titration was calculated.

Results:

TABLE SHOWING THE FINAL VOLUME, INITIAL VOLUME AND VOLUME USED IN cm 3

Rough 1 2
Final Volume 23.2 23.3 23.5
Initial Volume 0 0 0
Volume used/cm3 23.2 23.3 23.5

Calculations:

1) Calculate the average titre volume:

Volume Used/cm3= 23.2+ 23.3+ 23.5= 23.3 cm3

2) Calculate the number of moles of HCl present in the average titre volume:

# of moles= concentration* volume

= 23.3cm3  dm3
= 0.0233 dm3
= 0.1 moldm3* 0.0233cm3
= 0.0233 moles
3) Write a balanced equation for the react ion and write the mole ratio for the reactants beneath
your equation

HCl+NaOH→NaCl+H2O
Mole Ratio= 1:1
4) Using the acid to base mole ratio, find the number of moles of NaOH present in the pipetted
volume
