Dang Nguyen Exp 1 Measurements-1

Experiment 1 involved measuring the mass, volume, temperature, and density of various objects and substances. Mass measurements found pennies weighed 2.5g, nickels weighed 5g, and quarters weighed 5.67g. Volume measurements included finding a wooden block had a volume of 1cm3 and displaced its volume in water. Temperature measurements showed tap water was 20°C (68°F) and boiling water was 36.11°C (97°F). Density measurements found the density of alcohol to be 0.0575g/mL and the density of a wooden block to be 0.092g/cm3.

EXPERIMENT 1
Pre-Laboratory Questions and Exercises
Due before lab begins. Answer in the space provided.

1. Define the following important terms pertaining to measurements:

a) Accuracy: Accuracy means the closeness of the measured values to the actual value (or

true value or specific value).

b) Precision: Precision means the closeness of the measured values towards each other.

2. A 24.20 g sample of a metal displaces 1.26 mL of water. Calculate the density of the

metal.

We know that 1 mL = 1 cm^3, so 1.26 mL = 1.26 cm^3.

We know that the sample of metal weighs 24.20 g, so the density is:

24.20/1.26 = 19.20 g/cm^3.

3. A perfect cube of aluminum metal was found to weigh 20.00 g. The density of aluminum

is 2.70 g/mL. What are the dimensions of the cube?

we know that

Density = Mass/volume

volume = mass/Density

volume of aluminum cube is 20 g / 2.7g/ml =7.41 ml = 7.41e-6 m3.

dimension of cube = 0.0195 m = 1.95 cm

CHEM 1405 Experiment 1 3

4. What is the Celsius equivalent of –40 °F?

°F = (°C * 9/5) + 32 => -40°F = -40°C

EXPERIMENT 1 Name: Dang Nguyen

Post-Laboratory Questions and Exercises

Due after completing the lab. Answer in the space provided.

1. How do you distinguish between mass and weight of material?

Mass Weight

Mass m of a body is the amount of matter The weight w of an object is the force by
contained in it. which it is pulled by earth towards its center.

The value of mass is independent of gravity. The value of weight varies as gravitational
force varies.

The unit of mass is kg. The unit of weight is Newton (N), which is the
force with which the earth attracts.

2. Calculate the density of a rectangular solid, which has a mass of 25.71 g. It is 2.30 cm long,

4.01 cm wide, and 1.82 cm high.

Volume = 2.30*4.01*1.83 = 16.9cm3

Density (d) = mass / volume = 25.71 / 16.9 = 1.53 g/cm3

CHEM 1405 Experiment 1 4

EXPERIMENT 1

3. What is the difference between specific gravity and density? What is the specific gravity of
alcohol having a density of 0.79 g/mL? (Hint: You may need to Google “specific gravity.”)

Specific gravity is the ratio of density of substance to the density of the given reference material. Relative
density is the ratio of density of substance with that of water.

specific gravity = density of alcohol / density of water = 0.079 / 1 = 0.079

4. If 15 drops of ethanol from a medicine dropper weigh 0.60 grams, how many drops does it take
from a dropper to dispense 1.0 mL of ethanol? The density of ethanol is 0.80 g/mL.

Weight of 15 drops of ethanol = 0.60g => Weight of 1 drops of ethanol = 0.60 / 15 = 0.04g

Given density of ethanol = 0.80g/mL

Weight of 1.0mL ethanol = 1*0.80 = 0.80g

Therefore, number of drops does the medicine droppers take to dispense 1.0mL of ethanol

= 0.80 / 0.04 = 20 drops

5. Using appropriate table in Handbook of chemistry and physics, report the density of each of the
following substances.

a) gold metal = 19.32g/cm3

b) methyl alcohol (methanol) = 0.79g/cm3

c) zinc chloride = 2.907g/cm3
