Impacts of Information Technology On Education

Information technology has positively and negatively impacted education in several key ways. Positively, it has enhanced teaching and learning through new tools, provided easier access to global educational resources, and allowed for distance learning and educational games. However, it has also led to declining writing skills, increased cheating, and lack of focus. Overall, information technology has changed education by increasing access to information and enabling new forms of teaching and learning.

IMPACTS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ON EDUCATION

The prevalence of technology affects society in so many positive ways, and that
includes the education sector. Today's students not only have computers to help
them with their schoolwork, they have easy access to research tools while teachers
use technology to enhance the impact of their lessons.

The combination of education and technology has been considered the main key to
human progress. Education feeds technology which in turn forms the basis of
education. It is therefore evident that information technology has affected changes
to the methods, purpose and perceived potential of education. While education in
the past has been centered on teaching and learning, information technology has
affected changes to the aims of education, therefore now education is increasingly
perceived as the process of creating, preserving, integrating, transmitting and
applying knowledge. The future of education is not predetermined by modern
information technology, but rather that this “future will hinge prominently on how
we construct (and construe) the place of technology” in the education process. We
are moving from “just-in-case” education to “just-for-you” education where
education is targeted to meet the needs of individual students.

Many evidence shows that information technology brings positive and negative
impacts on education specifically on the learning of the students. Some of these are
:

POSITIVE IMPACTS

 ENHANCED TEACHING AND LEARNING

Technological developments like digital cameras, projectors, mind training
software, computers, PowerPoint presentations, 3D visualization tools; all
these have become great sources for teachers to help students grasp a
concept easily. It has to be understood that visual explanation of concepts
makes learning fun and enjoyable for students. They’re able to participate
more in the classroom and even teachers get a chance to make their classes
more interactive and interesting.

If a school's library is outdated or lacking in a selection of titles, a student

might find it difficult to compile the necessary research for an essay or
research paper. As long as the school has a computer lab, students are able to
use the internet and digital encyclopedias to obtain the research they need.
While students should be wary of the legitimacy of some of the content they
read online, many schools use software like the Encyclopedia Britannica to
help students make research.

 GLOBALIZATION
When schools in different parts of the state, country or world connect,
students can "meet" their counterparts through video conferencing without
leaving the classroom. Some sites, such as Glovico, are used to help students
learn foreign languages online by pairing a group of students with a teacher
from another country.

 DISTANCE LEARNING MADE MODERN

With the introduction of online degree programs, there is hardly any need of
being present physically in the classroom. Even several foreign universities
have started online degree courses that student can join. Distance learning
and online education have become very important part of the education
system nowadays.

In the past, students could take distance or continuing education classes, also
called "correspondence courses," at community colleges and universities.
After enrolling in a course of this style, a student would receive course
documents in the mail and would be required to mail assignments to his
teacher at the educational institution. The process could be long and
complicated. Thanks to technology, continuing education students can take
courses over the Internet at their convenience.

 EDUCATIONAL GAMES AND SIMULATIONS

In younger grades, teachers expose children to computers through
educational games. Instead of playing board games that focus on education,
students can learn the basics of spelling, counting and other early
educational lessons through computer games that make learning fun. Web-
based science and math simulations allow students to learn important
concepts with virtual labs. Because many schools have at least one computer
in each classroom, the teacher can make that computer a vital part of
learning for young students.

 Web Seminars: Learn and Participate

Not every school has the resources and budget to send its students on field
trips related to the course of study. When this is the case, the students'
education can suffer. But thanks to technology, students can use the internet
to virtually attend web seminars ("webinars") put on by museums and other
educational institutions. NASA, for instance, offers a program that allows
students to talk to astronauts in space.

NEGATIVE IMPACTS

 DECLINING WRITING SKILLS

Due to excessive usage of online chatting and shortcuts, the writing skills of
today’s young generation have declined quite tremendously. These days,
children are relying more and more on digital communication that they have
totally forgot about improving their writing skills. They don’t know the
spelling of different words, how to use grammar properly or how to do
cursive writing.

 INCREASING INCIDENTS OF CHEATING

Technological developments like graphing calculators, high-tech watches,
mini cameras, and similar equipment have become great sources to cheat in
exams. It is easier for students to write formulas and notes on graphing
calculators, with least chances of being caught.

 LACK OF FOCUS
SMS or text messaging has become a favorite pastime of many students.
Students are seen playing with their cellphones or iPhones day and night or
driving, and very often even between lectures. Being ever-connected to the
online world has resulted in lack of focus and concentration in academics
and to some extent, even in sports and extra-curricular activities.
New technologies are changing the way we learn and they have also changed the
process of teaching. Both teachers and students are using these new educational
technologies to archive specific academic goals. The only challenge is that
Information Technology comes at a cost, so those who cannot afford the price tend
to have difficulties to benefit from the opportunities
of Information Technology in education. For example; the increased use of
internet broadband makes it easy for students to access academic information on
time. Also teachers use this broadband internet to create and deliver academic data
using videos and graphic illustrations.

Below are some detailed points on the use of information technology in

education and schools.

 Plenty of Educational Resources: Information technology makes it easy

to access academic information at any time. Both students and teachers
use Information technology to acquire and exchange educational material.
For example; teachers can easily provide visual and audio classes to their
students using computers and broadband internet. This breaks the
boundaries of accessing information, because the student will simply
attend a lecture while not in a physical classroom. Also teachers can
assign tasks to students via electronic email or campus educational
forums.

 Instant Access to Educational Information: Information technology

speeds the transfer and distribution of information. Students can easily
access academic data using computers and new technologies like mobile
phone application. IT experts have coded educational applications which
can be used by students to access information very fast. These mobile
phone applications are replacing some old methods like borrowing of
books in libraries, now days students can use Library mobile phone
applications to download books inform of e-books, so they have these
books at any time which saves them time and helps them read at any time
anywhere.
 Full Time learning: Unlike in the past when learning was limited to a
physical classroom, students and teachers could only access academic
information while at school. Today, all that has changed, a student will
access information at any given time of the day. It does not matter where
they are or the time of the day is. Information technology has facilitated
online education, so you will find a student in Africa will study the same
course as a student in USA or India. And when it comes to getting jobs,
all these students will have the chance to compete for the same job.

 Group Learning: Information technology has helped students learn in

groups and it has also helped teachers teach students in groups. In past,
we used to have group discussions at school which required each member
to contribute, however the shy students could stay away from these
groups because of the fear of expressing themselves. Now with
information technology, schools have created academic forums, where
students can discuss about a specific topic with no fear of expression.
They can also engage in video and text chatting. Another benefit of these
online group discussions is that not all group members will be from the
same class or school as it was in the past. Students from various schools
around the world can be in the same academic group and share academic
information.

 Use of Audio – Visual: Information technology has changed the way we

learn and interpret information. The use of audio-visual education helps
students learn faster and easily. As opposed to text and blackboard notes,
students get bored in this form of education. It is a human weakness,
people do not want to read text for so long, they get bored, so the
introduction of audio-visual technology in education, makes students
enjoy what they’re learning. Visual illustration using images on projectors
helps a student understand the concept, because some of these images are
interesting and they look familiar to a student. Our brains tend to
remember visual illustrations easily more than text. This explains why
you can easily remember someone’s face but fail to remember their
names.
