This document contains instructions for 5 homework problems involving air conditioning systems. Problem 1 involves using a psychrometric chart to analyze the conditioning of air from 33°C and 60% RH to 24°C and 40% RH. Problem 2 involves calculating moisture content and temperature for air undergoing adiabatic saturation. Problem 3 involves cooling and reheating air to condition it from 34°C and 60% RH to 21°C and 50% RH. Problem 4 involves calculating the capacity of a humidifier and heating coil used to condition outdoor air. Problem 5 involves calculating values like refrigeration load and reheater capacity to condition a space given heat loads, outdoor air conditions, and use of fresh and recirculated air. The

INSTRUCTION: Solve the following problems, correctly and systematically, and show all the necessary figures.

Prob. # 1] Atmospheric air, 0.71 m3/s, at 33 oC DB and 60 % RH is to be conditioned to 24 oC and 40 %

RH. Using psychrometric chart, find a) the DP temperature, WB temperature, and vapor pressure for the
atmospheric air and for the conditioned air; b) the amount of moisture removed; and c) the heat
transferred. d) Solve the same requirements without using psychrometric chart.

Prob. # 2] a) Air at a condition of 30 oC DB, 17 oC WB and a barometric pressure of 1050 mbar (1.05 bar)
enters a piece of equipment where it undergoes a process of adiabatic saturation, the air leaving with a
moisture content of 5 g/kg d.a. higher than entering. Calculate the following: i. The moisture content of
the air entering the equipment; and ii. the DB temperature and enthalpy of the air leaving the equipment.

Prob. # 3] Atmospheric air at 34 oC DB and 60 % RH is to be conditioned to 21 oC DB and 50 % RH.

This is to be done by first cooling the incoming free air in a spray of chilled water to the dew point of the
desired state and then heating the resulting mixture. The temperature of the spray water increases from 3
o
C to 9 oC. For 6.0 m3/s of incoming free air, determine a) the temperature of the air leaving the spray; b)
the amount of vapor removed from the free air; c) the amount of spray water required; and d) the tons of
refrigeration required to chill the spray water back to 3 oC.

Prob. # 4] Outdoor air is 24 oC DB and 15 oC WB passes through an air washer in which water is
recirculated. The air washer has a humidifying efficiency of 70 %. It is then heated by a heating coil with
a coil surface temperature of 27 oC and a by-pass factor of 0.30. For 50 m3/min of outside air supplied,
determine: a) the capacity of the humidifier in TR; and b) the capacity of the heating coil in kW.

Prob # 5] A space to be air conditioned has a sensible heat load of 36 kW and a latent heat load of 10.2 kW. The
space is to be maintained at 26 C DB and 50 % RH. Outside air is at 32 C DB and 24 C WB temperatures. With a
reheater to satisfy the space conditions, the conditioned air will enter the space at 19 C. If 45 % of the supply air is
fresh air, and the rest is recirculated, find:
a. the volume flow rate of fresh air at supply conditions;
b. the apparatus dew point temperatrure;
c. the refrigeration load in TR; and
d. the reheater capacity.
