CHAPTER 1

PRELIMINARY
A. Bacground
Humans are creatures that need to interact with each other. This interaction
is increasingly important when humans need recognition of their existence. This
activity requires tools, facilities, or media, namely language. In this case, language
serves as a tool for communicating with one another.
In learning a language, both Indonesian and foreign languages, there are
several aspects that support the success of learning the language, one of which is
vocabulary. After all, learning a foreign language is not easy, it is very different if
we study our mother tongue and Indonesian. There are several things that become
serious problems when a student learns a foreign language, one of which is the
difficulty students experience when building vocabulary or vocabulary. Thus it
can be said that language is a tool that plays a very important role in our daily
lives, both in social life and in the environment in which we work. Humans cannot
live perfectly without language support.
Learning English in the Indonesian Education System starts from
elementary to tertiary level. Even today, English is also studied at the preschool
primary education level or what is known as PAUD (Early Childhood Education).
In learning English, there are four skills, namely: listening, reading, speaking, and
writing. Apart from the four skills above, there are also several components /
aspects that support learning English, namely: phonology, grammar, vocabulary,
and several other aspects.
In this case, the vocabulary aspect plays an important role in language,
both spoken and written. Language is meaningless without vocabulary. Therefore,
a student who is learning a foreign language is expected to be able to understand
and understand the vocabulary system of the language he is studying. A teacher in
this case acts as a facilitator and motivator for students, and helps them in their
efforts to enrich and improve their vocabulary. The use of tools / media in an

1
effort to add and enrich students' vocabulary is highly recommended. For
example, the use of illustrated cartoon media that is cute and attractive to students
is certainly a special attraction in an effort to enrich vocabulary. The most
important thing to realize is that a person's success in teaching languages is very
much dependent on the motivation, attitudes and interests of students.

CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION

A. Meaning Of Vocabulary
Vocabulary is a set of words that are owned by a person or other entity, or
are part of a particular language.
The meaning of vocabulary according to experts, namely:
1. Penny. According to Penny, vocabulary words are words that we teach
in foreign languages. So, if the vocabulary of a new language is
considered "vocabulary", if the vocabulary comes from a foreign
language.
2. Barnhart. He defines vocabulary as, "... (1) stock of words used by
person, class of people, profession, etc. (2) a collection or list of
words, usually in alphabetical order and defined."
So that it can be concluded from the understanding of several experts
about vocabulary. And vocabulary is a collection of several words combined to
have a meaning.
B. How To Teach Vocabulary
There are two techniques for teaching vocabulary, namely:
1. Vocabulary teaching techniques
In teaching vocabulary forms, there are at least three ways:
a. Visually
Visual vocabulary teaching can be done by showing the form of
the written word, showing the movements associated with the said
word, by moving the hand in the air while writing letters, or by
showing letters made of wood or plastic to spell.
b. With one touch
Teaching vocabulary by touch (tactile) can be done using letters
made of wood, sand paper, etc., so that students can feel the shape of

3
the letters arranged into words. Apart from that, you can also use a
writing system for the visually impaired such as braile, or by writing it
word for letter in the hands of the students.
c. By word of mouth
Teaching vocabulary orally can be done like speaking words or
other forms of speech.
2. Vocabulary meaning teaching techniques
Even in practicing this technique, there are at least three techniques that
can be used as a reference, namely:
a. Demonstration
This technique can be done by showing an object.
b. Picture
This technique can be done with a photo, drawing something on
the board, or illustrations from newspapers and magazines.
c. Explanation
This technique can be practiced by explaining synonyms or
antonyms of a word, defining it, or translating it.
C. The Importance of Vocabulary Learning
Learning vocabulary is an important aspect of learning a foreign language.
Students will improve greatly if they learn more words and expressions. As a
linguist David Wilkins (in Thornbury 2002: 13) says that learning vocabulary is
very important. "Without grammar, there is very little to convey, without
vocabulary there is nothing to convey." So, vocabulary is the flesh of a language
while grammar is a framework. In order to use language productively, students
must know a number of vocabulary, not only to communicate verbally, but also in
writing. This is in line with the concept of a communicative approach where
students have a great opportunity to use the language directly in class activities.
This approach is useful in increasing students' vocabulary. Through this approach
students are forced to use direct language in both oral and written communication.
The questions related to vocabulary mastery were what kind of words he
needed to know and how many words he should know. The vocabulary that

4
students should know first is high frequency words. These are the words he uses
most often in communication both in class activities and outside of class. High
frequency words are called general service vocabulary. Furthermore, he must also
know academic or sub-technical words which are not in the general service
vocabulary but often appear in various academic texts.
How many words a student should know varies. Kweldju (1997) found
that the mean vocabulary size of students from fifteen English majors ranged from
2041 to 3352 word families. A study conducted on 1776 students in 21 graduate
schools in Indonesia showed that the vocabulary size of postgraduate students
averaged 2,861 words, while the vocabulary size of S2 students was 2671 words
and doctoral students 3211 words.
Learning foreign language vocabulary presents the learner by first making
the correct connections when understanding the language between the forms and
meanings of words including distinguishing the meanings of closely related
words. Second, when producing language, use the correct tenses for the intended
meaning.
D. How To Learn Vocabulary Effectively
1. Read
Curiosity is very important in memorizing vocabulary. Great curiosity
makes your desire to learn and find out what you want to know even
stronger. If you memorize it straight from the dictionary, you are
guaranteed to be bored and stuck in just a few words. Start by reading
different types of reading in English, the markers or underlines of foreign
words, then work out their meaning.
2. Say and understand
The dictionary gives you the correct way to pronounce English words
or phrases. It can be in written form, or it can be spoken directly by a
native speaker. The dictionary that has this feature makes it very easy for
you to learn it. Say the word correctly and understand the meaning. Do it
repeatedly.
3. Write, practice, and explore

5
If you already know the meaning of a word that you find difficult,
have written it down in a notebook too, use that word to make a sentence.
The simplest sentence, which is usually used for everyday conversation.
You can practice the next step as you speak, usually it sticks closer to
your head and you can memorize it without having to practice it.
Remember don't be afraid to be wrong. These mistakes actually make you
try to keep learning to fix them. Explore your vocabulary by listening to
English songs, watching movies without subtitles, or watching foreign
broadcasts. The vocabulary will certainly continue to grow because you
will definitely try to find the meaning of the lyrics you get.
E. Vocabulary Benefits For Students
Benefits of vocabulary for students
1. Increase IQ; As I mentioned earlier that mastering Vocabulary will
increase your IQ and this statement is based on research from various
sources, but I do not explain the results of the research from which
side.
2. Improve speaking skills in English; Of course, this is the main
advantage of mastering Vocab, with the many words that we can
master and understand will make it easier for us to speak in English.
3. The third benefit is that Vocabulary can improve the ability to read
English texts. Which of course is also related to the advantages of the
two above. Vocabulary will indeed be very helpful in honing English
skills. Read well, speak even write.
4. One more benefit that is no less important is that Vocab will help you
get a high TOEFL, TOEIC, or IELTS score and this will make it
easier for you to pass the college entrance selection or win job fair
cookies, especially in 2015 we will welcome the MEA (ASEAN
Economic Community).
