Heath Ledger’s Performance in “Dark

Knight”:

Notes:
 Heath looks directly at Batman on the line “And you
didn’t disappoint, you let five people die.”
 He shifts his eyeline on the line “Then, you let them take
your place.” to show that he is visualising the events in
his head as he vocally recalls it.
 Then he returns his gaze to batman for the line, “even to
a guy like me that’s cold.” then the attention returns
back onto batman who he is conversing with.
 “so, they can get back to the way things were.” Heath
gestures and looks upwards, to show a sarcastic sense of
enthusiasm and positivity.
 “But I know the truth, there’s no going back, you’ve
changed things, forever.” Heath’s eyes move from side
to side as he looks around the room this shows the
subtext which is the situation he is in, being captured
and the events occurring with batman, in the movie.
 “I don’t wanna kill you.” As the Joker laughs and leans in
towards the Joker he doesn’t break intense eye contact
with Batman, to show an underlying sense of
seriousness beneath the text.
 “No, no, no” In-between each ‘no’ Heath pauses, and
looks around the room, up towards the ceiling to convey
that he is considering whether he wants to kill batman
and then ultimately concludes.
 “You, you, complete, me” In the middle of ‘complete’
and ‘me’ Heath blinks for a long time to portray sincerity
he then returns to direct eye contact.
 “Don’t talk like one of them” on ‘them’ Heath looks
towards the side where the police are this brings the
viewer’s attention outside the interaction between the
joker and batman but also to the fact that they are being
watched.
 “To them you’re just a freak” whenever the joker refers
to “them” he looks over to the side where off camera
people are watching the interaction.
Impact of Heath Ledger’s Performance:
Heath Ledger manages to convey all the subtext of the
character of the Joker through his eyes as well as
vocality and physical gesture.
Throughout the performance he widens his eyes to
communicate the crazed character of the joker.
Especially impactful moments that I acknowledged
were when Heath makes a distinction between Batman
and the others watching over them in the scene, by
emphasising “them” and looking off camera.
Heath acknowledges his surroundings, communicates
his relationship with Batman and the joker’s unstable,
mocking personality all through his eyes.

Inputting this stimulus into my own


performance:
From Heath Ledger’s performance I will ensure to use
my eyes in my performance to communicate subtext.
By considering what I will say before I say it, I can
create a more convincing performance.
