Past Simple and Present Perfect Simple

Task 1

I think I HAVE HAD (have) a very interesting life. I'm 73 now and I don't work anymore. I was in the army

for 51 year. I RETIRED (retire) when I was 69. I live in a small town in Luissiana. I HAVE LIVED (live) here for

the last 20 years. To be precise, I MOVED (move) here in 1995.

I have been to so many countries that I can't remember all of them. I HAVE BEEN (be) to Australia six or

seven times and to South Africa three times. I have also been once in Russia but I didn't like it at all: much

too cold for me! I HAVE NEVER BEEN (never/be) to Scandinavian countries but I would like to. I haven't

travelled since I VISITED (visit) my children last month.

I've never been on television, but I've been on the radio once. It WAS (be) a programme about life in the

military about twenty years ago. I MET (meet) the Prime Minister on the same day. Actually, I HAVE MET

(meet) a lot of famous people: members of the royal family, famous politicians and also famous cinema

and television personalities. I've never met the American President though which is a pity.

Because I've travelled a lot, I've seen a lot of wonderful things and HAVE ALSO EATEN (also/eat) and drunk

some strange foods and drinks. I ATE (eat) cat and rat ten years ago in India and DRANK (drink) something

called Mirto on a little island in Italy many years ago. That WAS (be) the first time that I have ever eaten a

cat and rat.

I HAVE JUST EATEN (just/eat) my special meal which my army friend SENT me two hours ago. He has

already sent me this meal many times and I always send him back my special drink. This week I HAVE

REPAIRED (repair) my old car, but it RAINED (rain) a lot yesterday so I COULDN'T (not can) go to the post

office to send it to my buddy.


Task 2

Jack HAS BEEN my friend for over 20 years. We HAVEN'T SEEN each other since we were children. Last

year, he and his family MOVED to a house on the same street as me, and now our children play together

almost every day. In 1995 they BOUGHT an old flat near hospital, and now they live near me. For the last

ten years, Jack and I HAVE PLAYED for the same hockey team every Saturday. We HAVE JUST GOT BACK

from the game. Last Saturday we WON Candian Rockets. Jack is a better player than I am, but in the last

few months he HAD /HAS HAD some trouble with his left knee, and he FOUND it hard to play a full game.

He SAW the doctor last week about this, but the doctor doesn't know what is causing his pain. Jack

DECIDED / HAS DECIDED to take a break from hockey for a while, so that his knee can recover. It's going to

be lonely on the team without him!
