If you have a local network, you’re probably sharing files between computers. In order to
protect your PC from unauthorized access Windows 10 uses network credentials. This is a
decent protection, but several users reported certain issues when asked to enter network
credentials on Windows 10.
Fix network credentials problems on Windows 10
Enter network credentials message can appear while trying to access shared drives or
directories and prevent you from accessing your files. Speaking of this message, here are
some similar issues that users reported:
 Enter network credentials the username or password is incorrect – This error can appear
if your password isn’t correct. This fix this issue, try entering your Microsoft account login
credentials.

of Windows. If you’re having this problem on Windows 8 or 7, you should know that most of
our solutions can be applied to both those systems.

Solution 1 – Check if your IP addresses are properly assigned

In a local network you probably assign all computers static IP addresses in order to access
them easier. According to users, your IP address might be set to automatic, and that can
sometimes cause issues with network credentials, therefore be sure to check if IP addresses of
your network devices are set to static. To set your IP addresses to static you can always use
your router’s built-in software.

Solution 2 – Enter your Microsoft account username and password

Windows 10 relies heavily on your Microsoft account, and since you can use your Microsoft
account to sign in to Windows 10, you can also use it to access other network devices in your
local network. Users reported that you can fix problems with network credentials simply by
entering your Microsoft account username and password instead of your local account’s
username and password.

It is important to mention that many network issues are caused by malware, various scripts
and bots. You can secure yourself by installing Cyberghost (77% flash sale), a leader in the
VPN market. It protects your PC from attacks while browsing, masks and manages your IP
address and blocks all unwanted access.

Solution 3 – Enter computer name in the username field

According to users, you can fix problems with network credentials by entering the name of
the computer that you’re trying to access followed by the username.
For example, if the computer you’re trying to access is named Computer1 and you have a
user named Mike, you need to enter both computer name and the user name in the user input
field. In our example the user name field would be Computer1\Mike. Bear in mind not to
enter any slashes before the computer name.

are missing’ on Windows 10

Solution 4 – Use username and password to log in to Windows 10

Users reported that you can’t connect to other network computers if you don’t use a username
and password to log in. This limitation mostly affects users that log in to Windows 10 by
using a PIN, therefore if you need to access and share files with others, you might want to
temporarily stop using PIN code for login.

Solution 5 – Add other PC’s network credentials to Credentials Manager

One way to fix the problems with network credentials is to add the other PC’s credentials to
the Credentials Manager. To do that you’ll need to know the name of the computer you want
to access, user account name and the password associated with that account. After you get all
this information you can add it to Credentials Manager by doing the following:
1. Press Windows Key + S and enter credentials. Choose Credential Manager from the menu.

Once you stop the service, check if the problem is resolved.

Solution 9 – Set your connection to Private

In case you’re not familiar, there are two types of connections, Public and Private, and
whenever you connect to a new network you’ll be asked to configure the network as Public or
Private. These two networks use different security policies, and sometimes those policies can
cause Enter network credentials message to appear.
Instead of changing individual policies, you should be able to quickly solve this problem by
changing your connection type from Public to Private. This is rather simple and you can do it
by following these steps:
1. In the Taskbar, click the network icon and choose Network & Internet settings.
2. Now select Change connection properties.

<img class="aligncenter
size-full wp-image-205357" src="https://cdn.windowsreport.com/wp-
content/uploads/2018/04/enter-network-credentials-private-2.png" alt="Windows 10 network

content/uploads/2018/04/enter-network-credentials-private-2.png 427w,

private-2-300x264.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px" />
3. Now set Network profile to Private.

<img
class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-205359" src="https://cdn.windowsreport.com/wp-
content/uploads/2018/04/enter-network-credentials-private-3.png" alt="Enter network

sizes="(max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px" />
After doing that, the issue should be completely resolved. Keep in mind that you should use
this step only on a secure networks. If you’re on a public network, changing these settings
might reduce your security, so keep that in mind.

Solution 10 – Create a new user account

If you’re having problems with Enter network credentials message, you might be able to
resolve the problem simply by creating a new user account. This is quite simple and you can
do that by following these steps:
1. Open the Settings app. You can do that quickly by using Windows Key + I shortcut.
2. When Settings app opens, navigate to Accounts section.

After doing that, you’ll have a new user account on your PC. Switch to a new user account
and check if the problem still persists. If the issue doesn’t appear on a new account, you
might want to consider using your new account instead of your main one.

Solution 11 – Change your user account options

changing your user account options. To do that, just follow these steps:

Windows is asking to "Enter Network Credentials" to access network ?

In newer MS Windows versions, it is sometimes impossible to access shared resources
on the network without entering a valid username and password, and that can cause
problems by itself with blank passwords, different user permissions on the target/client
PCs, etc. To make matters worse, this "password protected sharing" is enabled by
default on recent Windows versions. In such cases, your client PC shows the following
"Windows Security" dialog:

Enter network credentials

Enter your credentials to connect to: servername

Possible solutions to this common Windows network sharing issue are outlined below.

1. Turn off password protected sharing

Navigate to: Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center >
Advanced Sharing Setting > choose "Turn off password protected sharing" for all
networks.
Note: "Password protected sharing" must be disabled on the target/server PC, as this is
looked at even before checking network share permissions.

2. Let Windows manage the HomeGroup

Navigate to: Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center >
Advanced Sharing Setting > HomeGroup Connections > select "Allow Windows to
manage homegroup connections (recommended)."
You will be instructed to sign out, when you sign back in you should be able to access
network shares/devices without being asked for credentials.

Note: If still having an issue, you can try leaving the Homegroup, then joining it again.

3. Enter valid user credentials

If you'd like to keep password protected sharing turned on, or for some reason turning it
off does not help, you can use actual username/password to connect. Note that you
have to use an username/password from the target machine, you may have to enter it in
the following format:

User name: servername\username (where "servername" is the name of the target PC,
and username is a valid account on the target PC)

Notes:
The full path of the username could also work as: "\\servername\username" , or even
just "\username", depending on your environment.
If all the above fails, as a last resort for some older versions of Windows, you may have
better luck creating the same username on both the server and client PCs. Also make
sure the password on the server PC is not blank.

4. Add the target PC's network credentials to Credentials Manager

In newer Windows variants, navigate to: Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential
Manager > select "Windows Credentials" > Add a Windows Credential

In that menu, add the computer name you want to access, user name and the
associated password. After adding all the information, you should be able to access it
without further issues.
