RSRT320 - Problem Set 4

A patient is to receive extended SSD treatment with opposing AP/PA beams to deliver a total dose of 3500cGy over 20 fractions to the mid-plane with a field size of 20x30cm and a beam separation of 22cm. The student is asked to calculate the monitor units (MUs) needed using both percent depth dose (PDD) and tissue phantom ratio (TPR) methods and compare the results. The student should also calculate the dose to the depth of maximum dose (dmax) using both TPR and PDD data. A second problem asks the student to calculate the dose to the isocenter from anterior and posterior fields treating a lung using an isocentric technique if the spinal cord located

Problem Set #4

1. A patient is to be treated using extended SSD treatment of 120 SSD. He is to be treated with a
parallel opposed pair of beams (AP/PA) to a total dose of 3500cGy/20# to mid-plane and the field
size at mid-plane is 20X30 cm. The separation along the central axes of the beams is 22 cm.

Solve for MUs using both PDD method and TPR method. Compare the results – what are your thoughts?

Calculate the dose to dmax using both TPRs and PDDs.

2. A palliative lung is treated with POP fields (ant and post) using an isocentric SAD technique and a
field size of 10x10cm at the isocentre. The SSD for the ant field is 88cm and for the post field is 85cm
(beam energy 6MV).

The spinal cord is located 6cm from the posterior skin surface. If the cord receives 203cGy daily,
what is the dose to the isocentre from both beams (assume that the MUs from both fields are the
same and assume standard reference conditions)?

Try it with both PDDs and TPRs

Question 1 is to help prep for the quiz. Question 2 is to see how well everything is understood.
