PHILLIPINE HISTORY
What are the factors that influence the Filipinos to suffer more negative than positive traits?
Filipinos are known for their positive traits but sadly the negative traits are overpowering. Every
positive trait of a Filipino has its own counterpart, and from that too much leads to a negative
trait afterwards. The traits which are mentioned in the video was (1) Hospitality (2) Close Family
Ties (3) Respect for Elders (4) Fatalistic (5) Loyal to a friend (6) Tendency to be indolent (7)
Regionalistic (8) Sense of “pakikisama” (9) Mañana habit (10) Amor propio (11) Cheerful (12)
Gambler (13) Ningas cogon
In my own opinion the reasons why Filipinos are having more negative traits rather than positive
traits are maybe (1) History (2) The influence of Western cultures introduced by Spaniards and
Americans to our fellow Filipinos. Many have described that our Filipino traits was a mix of
Hispanic and Asian cultures, but we have the most common traits from the Latin American
moderately to Asian.
Examples of our negative traits that was seemingly influenced by other countries is/are the
following: (1) Hospitality, this means the way how Filipinos entertain and accommodate their
guest, this trait was influenced by Spaniards to us Filipinos. The negative trait of the Hospitality is
that the Mañana habit, wherein it was influence by the Spanish colonizers, and sadly carried by
our grandfathers, lolo and lola. Mañana habit, simple means procrastination, told to do
something but choose to do it later, or none at all, but strengthened by hundreds of years of
being carefree. (2) Close Family ties, this defines that the families are very close to each other
and thus, there are living at the same roof. The negative effect of this trait Close Family Ties is
that families may still be dependent on them in all aspects, food, bills, money and etc. They
don’t know how to be ashamed because they all know that it’s their family whom they ask for
money but the issue is that they should know how to live in their own, work hard and they
should also contribute to one another, no one is independent and no should also be dependent,
equality should really be established with a fair treatment for everyone. (3) Respect for elders,
this is a traditional in our country, this is when a Filipino child meets an older family member, the
youth customarily greet them with a gesture called mano po, taking the older relative's hand
and placing it on his or her own forehead to express profound respect for the elder. The
negative part of this one, this is true to some situations wherein the elders are doing a bad thing
and when the youth speak out and tell them that what they are doing is bad they will get angry
and will tell the youth that they are rude of BASTOS, wherein the action is just to tell the elders
there wrongdoings, the superiority of elders from the youth.
