Module 1 2nd Quarter d16

This document is a geometry module for an 8th grade class that discusses the conditions for a quadrilateral to be a parallelogram. It begins with the objective of illustrating these conditions. It then explains that a quadrilateral is a parallelogram if its opposite sides are parallel and congruent, or if its diagonals bisect each other. Several practice problems are provided for students to determine whether different quadrilaterals meet these conditions. The document concludes with an evaluation section containing multiple choice questions about properties of parallelograms.

MODULE IN GEOMETRY
STE- Grade 8
Second Quarter/ Week 6/ Day 1

OBJECTIVE: Illustrates the conditions which guarantee that a quadrilateral is a parallelogram.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

• Illustrating the Conditions Which Guarantee That a Quadrilateral is a Parallelogram.

You have learned in the previous lesson that the properties of parallelogram can
be used to find the measures of its sides and angles. This time, given some information
about a quadrilateral, you can tell whether a quadrilateral is a parallelogram or not.

TRY TO DISCOVER!

By definition, if the opposite sides of a quadrilateral are parallel, then the

quadrilateral is a parallelogram. There are other ways of proving that the given
quadrilateral is a parallelogram.

In our study of the properties of parallelogram, the conditional statement “if quadrilateral
̅̅̅̅ // 𝐸𝑈
BLUE is a parallelogram, then 𝐵𝐿 ̅̅̅̅”, is true.

• The converse of the statement is “If 𝐵𝐿 ̅̅̅̅ // 𝐸𝑈

̅̅̅̅, then quadrilateral BLUE is a parallelogram”.
Is this true?
• If this is true, prove it. If this is false, give a counterexample by drawing a figure satisfying
that ̅̅̅̅
𝐵𝐿 // ̅̅̅̅
𝐸𝑈 but which does not make quadrilateral BLUE a parallelogram.
• If your answer is false, what condition seem to be missing in order to guarantee that
quadrilateral BLUE is a parallelogram?

- The converse “If ̅̅̅̅

𝐵𝐿 // ̅̅̅̅
𝐸𝑈, then quadrilateral BLUE is a parallelogram”, is false.
- A counterexample showing that the statement is false is the trapezoid BLUE.

Here, ̅̅̅̅
𝐵𝐿 // ̅̅̅̅
𝐸𝑈 but BLUE is not a parallelogram. The missing sufficient condition for
quadrilateral BLUE to be a parallelogram is that ̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅.
𝐵𝐸 // 𝐿𝑈

The following are the conditions for a quadrilateral to be a parallelogram.

A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if:

1. its opposite sides are congruent.
2. a pair of opposite sides is parallel and congruent.
3. its diagonals bisect each other,
4. both pairs of opposite angles are congruent.

ARE YOU READY TO PRACTICE!

Use the given information to decide if LIFE is a parallelogram.

1. ̅̅̅̅
𝐿𝐸 ≅ ̅̅̅ ̅ ≅ ̅̅̅̅
𝐼𝐹 and 𝐿𝐼 𝐸𝐹 .

̅ ≅ ̅̅̅̅
2. 𝐿𝐼 ̅ // ̅̅̅̅
𝐸𝐹 and 𝐿𝐼 𝐸𝐹 .

3. ∠𝐸 ≅ ∠𝐼.

4. ∠𝐹 ≅ ∠𝐿 and ∠𝐸 ≅ ∠𝐼.

5. ̅̅̅̅ ̅ and ̅̅̅

𝐹𝐸 ≅ 𝐼𝐿 𝐹𝐼 // ̅̅̅̅
𝐸𝐿.

Answers: 1. Yes, its opposite sides are congruent.

2. Yes, one pair of opposite sides is both congruent and parallel.
3. LIFE may or may not be a parallelogram. No conclusion can be made.
4. Yes, both pairs of opposite angles are congruent.
5. LIFE may or may not be a parallelogram. No conclusion can be made.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 1

Determine whether the following tests can be used to prove that a quadrilateral
is a parallelogram. Write TRUE or FALSE.

_______1. The quadrilateral is regular.

_______2. Pairs of consecutive sides are congruent.

_______3. Both pairs of opposite angles are congruent.

_______4. Pairs of consecutive angles are congruent.

_______5. Pairs of opposite sides are parallel and congruent.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 2:

For each of the following statements, give the reason why 𝑴𝑵𝑶𝑷 is a
parallelogram.

̅̅̅̅̅ // ̅̅̅̅
1. 𝑀𝑃 ̅̅̅̅̅ ≅ ̅̅̅̅
𝑁𝑂 ; 𝑀𝑃 𝑁𝑂 .
_________________________________________________

𝑀𝑅 ≅ ̅̅̅̅
2. ̅̅̅̅̅ 𝑂𝑅 ; ̅̅̅̅
𝑃𝑅 ≅ ̅̅̅̅
𝑁𝑅 .
_________________________________________________

𝑀𝑁 ≅ ̅̅̅̅
3. ̅̅̅̅̅ 𝑀𝑃 ≅ ̅̅̅̅
𝑃𝑂; ̅̅̅̅̅ 𝑁𝑂 .
_________________________________________________

4. ∠𝑁𝑀𝑃 ≅ ∠𝑃𝑂𝑁; ∠𝑀𝑃𝑂 ≅ ∠𝑀𝑁𝑂.

5. 𝑚∠𝑁𝑀𝑃 + 𝑚∠𝑀𝑁𝑂 = 180; 𝑚∠𝑀𝑃𝑂 + 𝑚∠𝑁𝑂𝑃 = 180

SUMMING UP

Conditions Which Guarantee That a Quadrilateral is a Parallelogram

1. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if its opposite sides are congruent.

2. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if a pair of opposite sides is parallel and
congruent.
3. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if its diagonals bisect each other.
4. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if both pairs of opposite angles are congruent.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 3:

Given the following lengths and measures, tell why 𝑭𝑨𝑻𝑬 is a parallelogram.

1. 𝐹𝐸 = 9; 𝐴𝑇 = 9; 𝐹𝐴 = 16; 𝐸𝑇 = 16
_________________________________________

2. 𝐹𝑂 = 8; 𝐸𝑂 = 10; 𝑇𝑂 = 8; 𝐴𝑂 = 10
_________________________________________

3. 𝑚∠𝐸𝐹𝐴 = 120; 𝑚∠𝐹𝐴𝑇 = 60;

𝑚∠𝐴𝑇𝐸 = 120; 𝑚∠𝐹𝐸𝑇 = 120
_________________________________________

4. 𝑚∠𝑇𝐴𝐹 = 65; 𝑚∠𝐹𝐸𝑇 = 65
