COVID Compliance
The current UK government guildlines surrounding coronavirus at the time of the writing this log are;

• Wash Hands - Keep washing your hands regularly

• Cover Face - Wear a face covering over your nose and mouth in enclosed spaces
• Make Space - Stay at least a metre away from people not in your household.
• If you’re feeling unwell, get a test and do not leave home for at least 10 days.

Further on these guildines, Northern Ireland has its own rules, restrictions & guildlines which are as follows;

• Stay at home as much as possible

• Limit contact with other people
• Keep your distance if you do go out (stay 2 metres apart)
• Wash your hands well and often
• Work from home if you can

Due to these guildlines I will do most, if not all of my interviews via Zoom (or similar video chats) as to not put anyone at risk. In case I do need
to shoot an in person interview I have completed the ‘Coronavirus basic awareness on production training’ program

Dementia Research

11
Dementia affects around 850,000 people across the UK with some areas having a greater number of people
living with dementia than others.

Not everyone with dementia has a diagnosis. This can be due to a number of factors including difficulty
diagnosing in the early stages, the slow progression and limited public awareness of the diseases that cause
dementia

The diagnosis rate shows the proportion of the total number of people with dementia in each nation, who
have received a dementia diagnosis.

14,728 people have a dementia diagnosis in Northern Ireland

12
From 2006/07 to 2015/16, the number of people on the dementia register rose from 9,550 to 13,617, an
increase of 43%.

Diagnosis rate is calculated by dividing the number of people diagnosed with

dementia (as reported in national health statistics) by the total estimated number of
people living with dementia.

For Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales the diagnosis rates are slightly inflated as
these nations do not provide a breakdown of age in their published dementia
diagnoses reports, meaning they include both over and under 65’s. The calculated
rate for these nations is therefore all people diagnosed with dementia divided by the
estimated number of people living with dementia over the age of 65

The number of diagnoses over time by nation are shown below.

13
All information presented here is from nationally reported health statistics, with
annual reports from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and monthly reported
statistics from England.

This graph shows the projections of dementia prevalence in the UK

15
https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/about-us/policy-and-influencing/dementia-uk-report

The number of people with dementia in the UK is forecast to increase to over 1 million by 2021 and over 2 million by
2051. This is a worst-case scenario, under an assumption that there are no public health interventions and changes are
driven by an ageing population alone.

Cost

 The total cost of dementia in the UK is £26.3 billion.

 The NHS picks up £4.3 billion of the costs and social care £10.3.
 Of the £10.3 billion in social care costs, £4.5 billion is attributed to local authority social services for state funded
care.  The remaining £5.8 billion is what people with dementia and their families pay out annually for help with
everyday tasks that are provided by professional care workers, such as washing, dressing and eating.
 Two thirds of the cost of dementia (£17.4 billion) is paid by people with dementia and their families, either in
unpaid care (11.6 billion) or in paying for private social care.

Frequently asked questions to maybe answer in the film

16
What is the difference between Alzheimer’s and Dementia?

Does dementia run in the family?

Is it true that diseases like Alzheimer’s only affect older people?

Are there more women than men with dementia?

Why isn’t there screening for dementia?

Documentary Treatment

17
I plan to make a documentary style film about Dementia and how it effects a person experiencing it and those around them. I hope to bring
awareness and be informative about the subject as it’s something not many know about unless it effects a family member or someone close to
them.
I plan to include a few people including careers, family members and if possible, someone with dementia and get every side of the story and how
it affects everyone.
Before filming I will fully research and know exactly what I want before the cameras get turned on. If I do end up doing it in person, I will have
multiple different cameras for more angles to keep the visuals interesting between cutaways, and B-roll.
I have had multiple family members affected by Alzheimer’s, so it is a very personal topic to be and I want to raise awareness for the topic and
maybe encourage people to donate as well.
This will be kept as low contact as possible

Production Issues

18
I had a major issue before I even touched a camera and that was COVID and how it would affect my interview style documentary. Another issue
was getting people who are willing to share their experiences as they are extremely meaningful and heart breaking to retell, these two issues lead
me to involving family members, including my mother and her two sisters who had a mother who had dementia. My granny who has dementia
and auntie who is her main career and finally my great aunt, who’s late husband had dementia

Issue of abuse and neglect in the NI Music

Scene

24
TREATMENT

I will be making a documentary style film based on the ongoing issue of abuse and neglect in the NI Music Scene. I hope to bring awareness to
the problem of sexual assault and harassment and how to improve as a society.
In order to make my documentary as informative as possible will contact local NI bands that have a story to tell on how the music scene has
failed them. No one has to tell their story if they don’t want to, and if they are willing to share their story, I will offer to get someone else to do a
voice over if they prefer, to keep their identity private.
I am still thinking about whether to do actual interviews or do it over ‘zoom’ or another video call site and keep it as zero contact as possible.
Quarantine has made it harder to get B-roll footage, but my friend is willing to let me record shots of his band if needed.
Before filming I will fully research and know exactly what I want before the cameras get turned on. If I do end up doing it in person, I will have
multiple different cameras for more angles to keep the visuals interesting between cutaways, and if it done over ‘zoom’ I will edit it to look a
screen recording. For example, the shot of the person talking is closed and the mouse is seen typing a certain thing into YouTube and then the
video starts playing. (easier to explain in person, rather than over Word)
I have a basic idea about what I want but as soon as this gets the ‘all good’ I’ll start properly planning it.

I started my figuring out what bands I wanted involved and I contacted 3 local Derry/Londonderry bands and sent them this message

“Hello,
I’m a media student at NWRC and I’m doing a short documentary about sexual harassment in the NI music scene and was wondering if you’d
like to be involved. If yes, I’d love to record you reading out your statement you posted, as it will show that bands are doing their part to stand up
to the abusers”

25
In the following days I got responses back from them

I then went through different social medias seeing who I could contact about being in the video and made a list of people that made their story’s
public.

I realized after a few hours of searching I couldn’t find any actual proof (court cases or arrests) of anything actually happening. It was all just
‘she said, he said’
So that became a huge problem and making it impossible to make it a documentary if there’s no actual proof, which still gave me the option to
do a drama but if the second lockdown hits before I’m finished filming, I would be screwed.

26
The closet things I could find about proof that anything happened, but it wasn’t enough

https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/237464983.pdf

https://www.musiciansunion.org.uk/Home/News/2019/Oct/Sexual-Harassment-Widespread-Across-the-UK-Music-I

https://www.fr24news.com/a/2020/07/the-quebec-art-scene-shaken-by-a-wave-of-allegations-of-anonymous-sexual-misconduct-2.html

I then decided to change my idea altogether and thought of some ideas and ran them past my teacher

Ideas
Assault in the workplace

27
IVF (test tube babies)

Ideas
Dementia

How Covid as effect animal shelters

How Covid has affected travelling

Thinking about if lockdown happens again, I wouldn’t be able to do 3 of those ideas.
So, I was left with the Dementia and IVF ideas, both could be done as my family and extended family have went through both, so I wouldn’t
need to travel far or have to search for people to be in it.
