CE013 Plate 3 Elevation Plan

The document provides instructions for drafting elevation plans as part of a civil engineering laboratory manual. Elevation plans show the vertical dimensions and finished appearance of the sides of a building. Students will learn to draw the front, rear, left, and right elevations of a building based on its floor plan. The procedure outlines starting from the floor plan and projecting points to draw elevation lines, walls, windows, doors, and other vertical elements, and adding dimensions, labels and details.

Design Plate No. III
ELEVATION PLAN
1. Objective(s):
The activity aims to introduce the basic concepts, significance and procedures for the drafting of
the essential elevations for building plans which will serve as the basis for the development of the
technical plans.
2. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):
The students shall be able to:
2.1 Familiarize the basic operations and functions used in drafting elevation plan.
2.2 Determine the technical descriptions involved in the development of elevation plan.
2.3 Conduct the actual drafting of the front, rear, left, and right elevation plans.
3. Discussion:
Elevation Plan is an orthographic projection drawing that shows one side of the building or
structure. The purpose of an elevation drawing is to show the finished appearance of a given side of
the building and furnish vertical height dimensions (elevations). Four elevations are commonly drafted
which pertains to the typical four sides of a building, namely: front, rear, left-side, and right-side
elevations.

An elevation plan ordinarily includes the following elements/components: identification of the

specific side of the building or structure that the elevation represents; grade lines; finished floor and
ceiling levels; location of exteriors wall corners; windows and doors (on the exterior faces of the
building); roof features; porches, decks, ad patios; vertical dimensions of essential building features,
and; material symbols.
4. Resources:
AutoCAD 2017 version or lower
5. Procedure:
Initial Preparations
1. From the previous lot plan and floor plan activity, plot the floor plan which conforms to the required
parameters set for the lot plan using the sample land title provided.
2. Enhance and improve your floor plan and lot plan by providing the necessary details in the plan.
3. Carefully plan on how you would design the aesthetics of your house plan incorporating the
necessary design inputs from your previous floor plan activity.

After enhancing and improving your lot plan and floor plan
1. You may start drafting your elevation plan from a simple horizontal line representing the required
ground level or floor level and plotting vertical lines representing the required distances of the
essential features to be plotted for the particular elevation plan. Plot the remaining details on the
plan while considering the extra details required i.e. dimensions, labels. This requires creative
visuals of your planned designs while drafting them in an impromptu manner.
2. Another way to start your drafting is to place the floor plan directly above the space where the
elevation is to be drawn. The exterior walls to be represented by the elevation should be facing
down toward the elevation.
3. Project all points down to the free space.
4. Indicate the bottom level of the building and draw a horizontal line. Now measure all the required
vertical heights, ceilings heights, floor heights, etc. from this reference point.
5. Remove construction lines and determine if changes are desired in the over-all design.

6. Add details i.e. railings, windows, doors, etc.
7. Add dimensions, notes, and symbols.

Reminders in drafting the floor plan

1. Windows and doors located on the exterior walls must be included on the elevation. It is customary
to place the top portion/edge of a window on the same height as of the top portion/edge of a door.
2. Roof features are also shown in the elevation plans i.e. roof style, pitch, chimneys, vent shafts. If
more than one roof height is expected to be drafted in the design, start first from the highest section
for convenience.
3. Dimensions on the elevation are mainly vertical height dimensions. Features that must be
dimensioned are: ground line to the first floor level; finished floor levels to finished ceiling distance;
overhang width; height of the top of windows and doors (if reflecting these plans in the doors and
windows schedule is inadequate to properly define them); height of chimneys, vent shafts, and
other vertical protrusions above the roof.
4. Use appropriate spot elevation markers for each floor level to be provided with labels for its
elevation or distance from a specific level.
5. Enhance and improve your designs in elevation plans by adding aesthetic details, hatches,
textures, colors, etc.
