False memories: False memories are mental experiences
that people believe are accurate representations of past
events. A false memory is a fabricated or distorted recollection of an event. Such memories may be entirely false and imaginary. In other cases, they may contain elements of fact that have been distorted by interfering information or other memory distortions.
These memories are based on the happenings which are
happened to a person in his childhood or same days, years ago .In 1974, Elizabeth loftus and john Palmer conducted a study, In one study the participants watched the video of cars accident and were asked what they have saw in the film. Some participants were asked how fast were the cars going when they smashed into each other? While the other asked the same question but the word “smashed” is replaced with “hit”.
When the participants were given a memory test pertaining to
the accident a weak later, those who had been asked the “smashed” to a question were likely to have a more false memory about the accident. Loftus suggested that after some time the original memory got faded and false memory build more readily.
CAUSES OF FALSE MEMORY
Factors that can influence bad memories include
misinformation and misattribution of the original source of the information.
Can we create false memories?
Yes, people usually recall childhood events that happened to
them and through effective suggestion they can even make new false memories. People can be tricked into remembering events that never happened or totally change the detail of things that actually happened.
Preschool aged children are more susceptible than older
children and adults.
Types of Eye witness memory
Recall memory: Reporting details of previously witnessed event which is happened to them or to other person and they have eye witnessed that moment. Those people fabricate the event according to their own sensitive mind which causes problem and these event remain with them for a longer period.
Recognition memory: Reporting whether what is
currently being viewed/ heard is the same as previously witnessed person/event of interest
Nature of eye witness memory
1) Murder ,shootout ,accidents ,robbery 2) Emotional and stressful arousing 3) Reconstructive process
Potential effect of false memories
While we all are familiar with the fallibility of memory (who hasn’t forgotten an important bit of information). May people do not realize how common false memory really is .People are remarkably susceptible to suggestion which can create memories of events and things that didn’t really happen to us.
For example: a memory that you plug your phone to the
charger but in reality you don’t. Actually we fabricate the things by ourselves which are not actually happened.
False memory can have serious implications. Researchers have
found that false memories are one of the leading cause of false conviction, usually through the false identification of a suspect or false recollections during police interrogations.
It is very difficult to believe that we all have false memories.
Our memories are not as reliable as we think with the passage of time they got faded and form quite easily, even among those people who have very good memories.
