Test N=2 (Text Analysis)

Name………………………………gr.402b
I. Read the text After 20 years attentively and do the post text activities.

1. Make up the summary of the text. 5p

One night, a policeman on the beat finds a man waiting for his friend Jimmy Wells, an
appointment they had made twenty years ago. The policeman then walks away and shortly after
a tall man comes to fill the appointment. However, it turns out that the tall man is a cop who has
been sent by the former policeman to arrest the man waiting, and that the former policeman is
Jimmy Wells, who came to meet his friend, but found that he was a wanted criminal.

II. Answer all these questions which will help you analyze the text. 30 p
1. What inference do you make about each man based on Bob's decision to go West and Jimmy's
decision to remain in the East?
Their decisions reflect their values. Bob and Jimmy have disparate lifestyles it proves
their locales’ chosen. The life in West is so different from East, as the Bob and Jimmy are.
Jimmy chooses to remain in New York because this place suits him. He was a ``kind of a
plodder’’. Boob chooses to go West in search of quick success. He thinks it will help him to seek
his fortune and to become wealthy.

2. What do you infer about Bob when he says, "You see, the West is a pretty big proposition, and I
kept hustling around over it pretty lively"?
The Bob’s words mean that there is a very big area in the West side and there is nothing so you can roam
around and do many things. It is so free and also feels lively.
3. What do you infer about Jimmy based on the information in his note to Bob?
Jimmy’s note to Bob describes his moral situation. He even so maintained his old friend’s
residual emotional attachment, but he is still responsible for following the fundamental law. The
note tells that Jimmy and Bob were very close friends and it was their bond which made it
difficult for Jimmy to arrest Bob.
4. Who has been more successful, Bob or Jimmy? Explain your answer.
I think Jimmy has been more successful in his career than his friend. It is not because he became
a guardian of peace. It is a question of personal ethics. He was concerned with the means to
achieve his end. He led a contented life and gained respect from colleagues and general public as
an honest officer. In twenty years Jimmy Wells had developed a good physique and a slight
swagger. There was an air of pride about his movements. Bob, on the other hand wasn’t bothered
about the means. He just wanted to make money even violating the laws of the land. Bob may
have been more successful in making money. But he is haunted by the fear of being arrested all
the time.
5. The passage of twenty years has affected the setting, or place. Has it also affected the characters?

6. Have the two men changed? Why can't Jimmy arrest his friend? What clues paved the way for the
surprise ending?

7. Do you think people can be affected, or changed, by where they live? Do you think they can be
affected by the passage of time? Explain your answers.

8. Compare and contrast Bob and Jimmy.

Bob and Jimmy were two best friends. Friendship was the common thing between them.
They both were of the same age. They had a strong link of friendship. They both lived in New
York before aparting. They both were promising. They both had respect and strong feelings for
each other. They were devoted to each other as friends. Their friendship was precious for them.
Though Bob and Jimmy were two best friends, they were poles apart as per as their
adjectives concerned. Bob was ambitious while Jimmy was satisfied. Bob had a vast vision for
money and he wanted to be a rich man at any cost but Jimmy was a home stayed character. He
thought that New York was the only place on the earth. Bob went to the west to make his
fortune while Jimmy liked New York badly.

9. What external conflict is presented in the story? What internal conflict is presented?
The predominant conflict in "After Twenty Years" is an internal one that is not apparent until
the surprise ending of the story. This internal conflict arises between friendship and duty within
the character of Jimmy. The external conflict has to do with the twenty years that have passed
since the two men have seen one another.  People change a lot in twenty years, and both men
have no idea what to look for in a physical appearance.

10. Find the sentence near the end of the story that suggests the theme. What is the theme?
11. What conclusion do you draw from the fact that both Bob and Jimmy keep their promise to meet
after twenty years?
12. What conclusion do you draw from the fact that Jimmy has his old friend arrested?

III. State the idea of the text. 5p

V. Point out the conflict of the story. Whose side do you take in the conflict? 10 p
Bob identifies that the man he is talking to is not his friend. Actually, the man is a police officer
in plain clothes
VI. Is the title appropriate? Does it reflect the point of the story? 10 p
In my opinion, the title is appropriate and reflects the point of the story because it has both a
literal and figurative meaning. Literally, the twenty years have gone by since the friends last saw
each other. Figuratively, twenty years can change circumstances but also preserve bonds.
VII. What is the social significance of the story? (problems) 5p

VIII. Point out the type of the narrative and the type of the narrator.
After Twenty Years is told from the omniscient point of view. An omniscient narrator knows
everything about everybody in the story. This narrator can tell you all about the characters, their
most private feelings, their pasts, even their futures.
