Persepolis Analysis Questions

Chapter 8: “Moscow” & Chapter 9: “The Sheep”

Directions: After reading and annotating both chapters, address ONE analysis question for
EACH chapter in a clear and concise paragraph, using at least two quotes and/or authorial
choices for support. Simply delete the prompt that you choose not to address.

Chapter 8: “Moscow”

If you have not done so already, read the short introduction at the beginning of the book and
annotate Satrapi’s primary reasons for writing the graphic novel. Then, after having read this
chapter, evaluate her level of success in completing at least one of those goals.

OR

Analyze Marji’s primary conflict within the chapter, examining the opening panels and then the
final panels. Is this conflict actually resolved? What is Satrapi’s main theme?

_____________________________________________________________________________

Chapter 9: “The Sheep”

Examine the title of the chapter and the underlying significance of a “flock of sheep.” Discuss
multiple examples within the chapter where individuals fulfill this symbolic meaning and then
elucidate Satrapi’s main point.
OR

Analyze Marji’s character development over the course of the chapter, supporting each stage of
development with at least one quote or authorial choice. Then, thoroughly expound on the
significance of the final two pages of the chapter.
