Introduction to this Guide
This chapter provides information about what is contained in the System Requirements
and Platform Support Guide. It also provides information about the vFoglight
documentation suite and Quest Software.
About vFoglight
vFoglight is an application management solution that reduces or eliminates service
disruptions to unify IT and the business. Unlike other solutions, it provides a correlated,
360 degree view of your applications from end user to database and from service levels
to infrastructure—to source the root cause of every incident impacting your business
and fix them quickly. vFoglight correlates data from multiple perspectives into a single
version of the truth to provide deep insight into the service relationships that exist
between end users, the business and infrastructure components. Its unique adaptive
technology rapidly adjusts to change for improved application performance and service
levels, reduced operational cost and risk, and enhanced visibility for all stakeholders.
• Online Help: You can open the online help by selecting the Help tab from
vFoglight’s action panel.
• PDF: The Getting Started Guide, What’s New Guide, System Requirements and
Platform Support Guide, Installation and Setup Guide set, Administration and
Configuration Guide, vFoglight User Guide, Command-Line Reference Guide,
Web Component Guide, and Web Component Tutorial, are provided as PDF files.
The PDF guides are included in the zip file downloaded from Quest. Adobe®
Reader® is required. In addition, the cartridges ship with PDF guides. To view the
installed PDF guides, in Windows go to Start > Programs > Vizioncore>

Hardware Requirements and
Guidelines
This chapter outlines the Windows and UNIX hardware requirements (CPU, RAM and
disk storage) for 32- and 64-bit installations of the vFoglight Management Server and
the database repository.
Tip We recommend reviewing the installation documentation and release notes for any cartridges
you plan to use, to ensure there are no additional hardware requirements beyond those
specified here.
32-bit Platforms
The hardware requirements for a single-tier 32-bit installation of vFoglight are as
follows:
RAM 4 GB in total:
• 2.4 GB for Management Server
(1.6 GB for Heap, 0.8 GB for Java Virtual Machine)
• 0.8 GB for database repository
• 0.8 GB for the operating system
Important Some 32-bit operating systems, such as Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, have a
4 GB memory limit. Please adjust your memory allocation accordingly. Windows Server
2003 Enterprise Edition can support up to 32 GB of physical memory with the Physical
Address Extension utility enabled. For more details, please see
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778(VS.85).aspx.

64-bit Platforms
The hardware requirements for a single-tier 64-bit installation of vFoglight are as
follows:
RAM 12 GB in total:
• 6 GB for Management Server
(4 GB for Heap, 2 GB for Java Virtual Machine)
• 4 GB for database repository
• 2 GB for the operating system

vFoglight Agent Manager runs on monitored hosts. It uses minimal system resources;
the amount depends on a variety of factors including the number of agents running on
the monitored host, the amount of data being collected, and whether the vFoglight
Management Server is running.
The following table lists the system resources typically used by the vFoglight Agent
Manager while it is running:
Hardware Requirements and Guidelines 19
vFoglight Agent Manager Resource Requirements
CPU Usage • Varies greatly by cartridge / agent, the amount of data being
collected, and the complexity of the technology being monitored
• Average is 4.8% CPU utilization
Caution This section is intended to provide general information that is applicable to most
vFoglight installations. You should not consider doing a production implementation
without conducting a proper scoping and sizing exercise with a qualified Vizioncore
representative.

Supported Platforms
This chapter outlines the platforms supported for the vFoglight Management Server and
database repository, supported platforms for the vFoglight Client and Agent Manager,
supported operating systems for the Operating System cartridges, and requirements for
other software used with vFoglight.
1
On 64-bit Linux platforms, the 32-bit version of libgcc*.rpm must be installed
for the installer and vFoglight Management Server to run.
Note vFoglight is a multi-threaded software application running in a Java Virtual Machine (JVM).
It runs on, and takes advantage of, MultiThreading and HyperThreading (also known as
Simultaneous MultiThreading) enabled environments.
vFoglight is licensed for open systems only, in accordance with the supported platform
matrix.
Unless you are running the installer in console mode, verify that you have an X Windows
environment prior to installing vFoglight on UNIX platforms.
The following table lists the external databases supported for vFoglight 6.0. These
versions are supported for any platform supported for the vFoglight Management
Server.
While you can run your external database on any operating system platform supported
by your database vendor, Vizioncore will only support database issues that can be
reproduced on the following OS platforms (32- or 64-bit):
HP-UX 11i v2
Sun Solaris 10
