March 2011 Student Led Conferences


The following table outlines the responsibilities of students and parents at our student-led conferences.
Students are expected to describe, explain, justify and respond to parent questions regarding the items listed
in the chart below. Parents, your role is to question, support, and celebrate your child’s work and their
learning.

Humanities – This conference should take 20 -30 minutes


Focus Tasks and Questions to complete during Student Led Conferences.
Student  Is your humanities work organized using dividers and is your work placed neatly in your
Organization binder? Are other subjects mixed in with your humanities work?
 On your computer do you have separate folders for different sections of humanities (i.e.
Social Studies, Novel Study, Writing)? Do you use these folders or is everything stored
on your desktop/downloads folder/documents folder?
 Are you always on time for class? Do you come prepared with all of your materials (i.e.
your reading material, notebook, laptop, pen etc.)?
 Are you a good citizen in class? Do you contribute to a positive classroom environment
by staying on task, collaborating well with your peers, and contributing to group
discussions? Do you take away from a positive classroom environment?
Novel Study:  Explain the process of planning your graphic novel. Show your parents one or two of
Graphic Novel your preparatory assignments (theme statement, visuals rough draft, narrative map, etc.).
 Explain to your parents how you created your graphic novel (Toondo, Pixton, Comic
Life, etc.).
 Explain to your parents how you worked collaboratively (with your partner) to create this
project.
 Did you use your class time wisely? If not, why?
Renaissance  Explain to your parents some basic facts and conditions that existed before and during
Study: the Renaissance.
Renaissance Now  Explain to your parents the digital textbook you created for this project.
 Show them an example of the “talking to the text” reading strategies.
 Explain to your parents the connections you made to Calgary today in your Renaissance
Now project and show them your final project.
For Term 3:  Show your parents your personalized editing checklist and explain its creation and how
Exemplary you will use it in the future.
Learning  Show your parents the “Exemplary Learning” poster.
 Use your “exemplary learning” reflection to explain your connection to the “Exemplary
Learning” poster.

Lakeview Community Association.
Information and volunteer opportunities will be presented in the IAC during student-led conferences March
17th and March 18th.
