SGS SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY

Every day, people share insights and opinions relating to SGS and our
industry on social media. We recognize the importance of taking part in
these conversations around the work we do at SGS and the opportunity it
gives us to demonstrate our expertise in this area.
We believe that the SGS brand is best represented by its people and we
encourage you to use social media - in the right way. This policy is to help
set you on the right path.

WHAT DO WE MEAN WHEN WE TALK ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA?

Social media refers to any tool or service that facilitates conversations online. When
we talk about external social media, we’re speaking about “traditional” channels, such
as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Weibo, as well as other platforms you may use that
include conversations. For example, YouTube, WeChat, Amazon, blogs and wikis are
all part of social media. Be aware that logging into other sites using your social media
accounts can also be considered as using social media.
Yammer is an internal social network, for use within SGS. It provides a vibrant, secure
environment to connect with colleagues across business lines, regions and specialities
to share meaningful information and reach out for help where you need it. As well as
this social media policy, please take a look at and follow our Yammer House Rules.

WHO IS THIS POLICY FOR?

SGS has developed this policy for all SGS employees, suppliers and contractors to
follow whenever contributing to an online conversation where you refer to the fact that
you work for SGS or if there is potential impact on SGS.
Where applicable law permits, SGS reserves the right to monitor social platforms
and take appropriate action to protect against misuse that may be harmful to the
company’s reputation. If you do not follow the policy when engaging in social media
you could face serious consequences up to termination in line with the laws of the
country where you are employed.
So please read this policy carefully and make sure you understand it. If you
have any questions about this policy or social media in general, please email
socialmedia@sgs.com.

OUR CORE PRINCIPLES:

1. Exercise good judgment – only post content you would feel comfortable sharing
with your manager, your colleagues or on the front page of a newspaper.
2. Add value – when you post work-related content, provide useful information or
insight that is relevant to your network.
3. Confidentiality is crucial – do not share confidential and proprietary information
online.
4. Transparency is key – identify yourself and say you work for SGS if talking about
our activity.
5. Respect your audience – make sure you are not engaging in any conduct that
would not be acceptable in the workplace. Your behavior online should be
consistent with our Business Principles.
6. Productivity is essential – use social media to help you be more productive but
remember to find a proper balance between social media and other work.
7. Be a brand advocate – follow SGS on social media. Share and like content that is
relevant for your network.
EXERCISE GOOD JUDGMENT
The lines between public and private, personal and professional are often blurred on
social media. Even when you use social media in a personal capacity, or away from
the office, you create an online footprint which means it is likely you can be identified
as an SGS employee. Make sure you are engaging in the right way. Be aware that you
are legally responsible for your postings, so you may be liable if you post any unlawful
information.
Tips:
•• Don’t forget that anything posted on social media can go viral, no matter what
your privacy settings.
•• Only post content you would feel comfortable sharing with your manager, your
colleagues or on the front page of a newspaper.
•• If in doubt, don’t post.

ADD VALUE
You have the opportunity to help shape our online reputation and to demonstrate
our business expertise. Use your specialist knowledge to enrich discussions, solve
problems, and promote idea-sharing.
Tips:
•• Remember that social media is about conversations. Encourage comments and
discussions. You will have more rewarding interactions with your connections if
you remember to have conversations rather than drive agendas.
•• Recognize that you should pass on a question if you are unable to answer it
yourself.
•• Double check your content before posting for accuracy and spelling mistakes.
•• Don’t use social media for covert marketing or public relations.
•• We have official programs for technical experts, sales people and recruiters on
social media. Let us know if you’d like to join: socialmedia@sgs.com

CONFIDENTIALITY IS CRUCIAL
Social media encourages you to share information when you join conversations.
However, you need to be careful about what you publish – particularly on external
platforms. No matter whom you are talking to, do not post or discuss content related
to:
•• Clients, client behaviour, client projects or contracts.
•• SGS financial results and business performance.
•• Confidential information including intellectual property or trade secrets, product
information, pricing, and strategies – belonging to SGS or any third party that has
disclosed information to SGS.
•• Personal information about colleagues, or anyone you work with at SGS.

TRANSPARENCY IS KEY
Trust is essential to building relationships online. Build trust with your network by being
transparent. If you are talking about business activities, identify yourself and say you
work at SGS.
Tips:
•• Make sure people understand you are not speaking on behalf of SGS. Only those
officially designated by SGS have the authorization to speak on behalf of the
company.
• People want to know who you are. Use a real picture of yourself, not the SGS
logo. Do not create an account with the SGS name.
• Where possible on your profile, include a disclaimer, such as “The views on this
site are my own and don’t necessarily represent SGS’s positions, strategies or
opinions.”
• If you make an error, be upfront about your mistake and correct it quickly.

RESPECT YOUR AUDIENCE

On social media you will encounter people from all walks of life. It is fine to disagree
with others, but please do so in a respectful manner. As a general rule, do not engage
in any conduct that would not be acceptable in the workplace. For example, do not
make derogatory remarks, threaten or harass other users, use insults or post content
that is offensive, defamatory, discriminatory or obscene. Your behavior online should be
consistent with our Business Principles.
Tips:
• People who you don’t know and who don’t speak your language may read your
posts. So consider your tone, use simple language and keep sentences short to
avoid misunderstandings.
• Be attentive to others and take the time to listen and be understood.
• Don’t engage in topics that may be considered inflammatory – such as politics and
religion.
• Don’t respond to offensive or negative posts. There’s no winner in that game.

PRODUCTIVITY IS ESSENTIAL
Social media can be a vibrant, active environment to connect with stakeholders and
share meaningful information. Use social media to help you be more productive but
remember to find an appropriate balance between social media and other work.
Tips:
• On professional networks, such as LinkedIn, connect with your clients and other
stakeholders.
• Follow client companies and join groups that are related to your industry to stay up
to date with the latest news.
• Don’t use external social media for internal communications or to conduct daily
business operations with a client, such as providing a quote. Instead use the
appropriate official and secure SGS channels.

BE A BRAND ADVOCATE
Share your enthusiasm for the brand. Done the right way, you can help boost the
group’s reputation as a thought leader and an employer of choice.
Tips:
• Follow SGS on social media. You can find a list of our accounts here:
www.sgs.com/socialmedia.
• Share and like content that is relevant for your network.
• Only share content about SGS that has already been shared on SGS website or
official social media channels.
• If you see something being shared related to SGS that shouldn’t be happening,
rather than acting yourself, please let us know: socialmedia@sgs.com.
• If you want to be involved in an official social media account or program, please
contact us: socialmedia@sgs.com.
