After a year of lost hope in school spirit, the seniors finally have a glimpse into what is
planned for the remaining of their last year of high school. The Class of 2021 Executive Board
has been putting tremendous effort into the planning of a variety of senior events that could be
possible despite the pandemic. As of now, we have a guaranteed prom, graduation, post-grad,
parade, and spirit week, and recently there has been news of Senior Assassin. Senior Assassin
is a traditional senior game commonly played in high schools as an end-of-the-year
memorabilia. Class of 2021 Vice President, Solomon Nguyen, who has been a prominent part in
the planning process of this event, explains the game as “a tradition played throughout the
United States with the senior class. Kids are given a target and which they are supposed to
squirt with a water gun. The game eventually narrows to two finally players where only one will
one win the big cash prize.”
Since many traditional senior events were not allowed to happen until now, many seniors
have expressed great excitement with the news of this student-run event, hoping this game will
be a fun, end of the year celebration, and hopefully garner some school spirit, which has been
lost for a while. Though big group events like prom and graduation have been approved, we do
have to keep in mind that there is still a pandemic going on, and events must have limited
restrictions for safety purposes. However, a game like Senior Assassin can be played without
breaking any safety protocols: “With the pandemic going on, the exec board believes that we
are still able to play this game as students will be told to practice social distancing and spray the
water guns from at least 6ft away,” Solomon says.
The planning of this event had stayed secret from the school for a while since, of course,
it cannot be played in school or on school grounds, but now the Exec Board is announcing the
news to the seniors, after fighting for a while to let this event occur. Solomon speaks on behalf
of the entire Exec Board when he explains why they planned this event: “It is something that
many students have looked forward to since freshman year. As a class, we have not been able
to put on as many social events as we normally would have,” He further said, “The exec board
hopes that this event will allow the class to come together in some sort of way that is fun but at
the same time safe.”
Though a chance at a normal senior year is becoming more and more achievable, there
are still concerns that not all students will participate. I asked Solomon how he would encourage
seniors to participate in this event: “There is not much encouragement that needs to be done in
order to get students involved in this event. I believe that the idea that kids could possibly win a
cash prize for spraying their friends with a water gun speaks for itself,” he expressed. The
purpose of this event was to recover the school spirit in the senior class that has been missing
since last March when the pandemic originally hit, so the Exec Board has done everything in
their power to give their class back what they have missed out on.
Currently, the sign-up process or start date of the event has not been announced or
determined yet, but seniors can follow the Instagram account “lhsseniorassassin21” run by
Class President Dylan Balon and Parliamentarian Edward Foster for more details soon.
