Noam Chomsky: Requiem for the American Dream with Amy Goodman
In this video, Noam Chomsky discusses his book and addresses key issues that have
defined the American foreign policy over the past few years. AT the beginning of the discussion,
Chomsky discusses the evils the Republican Party has been engaged in from his point of view.
His criticism of the Republican Party was on key issues that are of importance to Americans.
The discussion with Amy Goodman on issues of US foreign policy is based on five key
issues i.e., North Korea, Nuclear War, Iran, Yemen, and Taliban Attack. On the issue of North
Korea, Chomsky analyses how the relationship between the United States is the way it is. He
asserts that all the threats that North Korea has been posing towards the United States are based
on actions or threats of actions by the United States. Whenever the United States goes silent,
In Iran and Yemen, the United States has operated on a specific policy where Iran is
treated as an adversary. The hostile relationship between the US and Iran, according to
Chomsky, is based on each country claiming to protect itself from the other. The same is the case
with Yemen. Chomsky also discusses the Syria with its leader Asad. Asad is described by
Chomsky as a leader of a murderous regime. Chomsky has doubts on who was responsible for
the chemical attack that happened in Syria. He provides different alternatives as to who might
As Noam Chomsky discusses his book, I am drawn to the third principle where he
discusses how problems that countries like the United States could be solved if there was a
functional democracy. Crises have been handled poorly because the systems that exist are
incapable of generating change. One of the key takeaways from the discussion was the 2007-
2008 financial crisis that affected the United States. Chomsky asserts that before the crisis,
economists were enthusiastic that the economy was doing fine. At the time, wages were reduced
to the lowest they had been since 1979. The financial crisis occurred as a result of the system
Noam Chomsky asserts that modern democracy is not efficient in handling different
problems. In the United States, democracy is not representative of the majority of the population.
There is always anger directed towards government and elected officials. As a result, people are
unable to get any meaningful change from their government and if there is any, its only for
Communities are often divided based on their identities in order to marginalize them.
Republicans, for instance, use people of color as perpetrators of violence and crime in inner
cities. This alienates them from the party. Democrats, on the other hand, promise the
marginalized communities changes but fail to change anything once they are in power.
Noam Chomsky’s discussion sheds light on key issues affecting democracies across the
world. From the discussion, one can easily understand the challenges that modern democracy
faces. The United States system of governance and society in general provide a synopsis of how
modern form of democracy is not effective. Modern democracy is mostly motivated by wealth
and power. This helps explain why the United States is interests in different countries across the
