05task2 Rizal

Rizal wrote an essay defending Filipinos from the Spanish claim that they were inherently indolent. He acknowledged that indolence existed among Filipinos but argued it was caused by external factors introduced by the Spanish, such as the climate, social disorders, abuse and discrimination, rather than it being part of the Filipino nature. Rizal traced how the Filipinos were previously hardworking people engaged in mining, manufacturing and trade before the Spanish arrival, becoming indolent only after the Spanish took control of the country.

Why did the Spaniards brand us as indolent?

In pre-colonial times, the Filipinos were hardworking and diligent, mining and
manufacturing. The indolence developed when the destiny was taken away from them. Before
the Spaniards came we were active and honest in trading, use our abilities and resources for
our country’s benefits, never corrupt, industrious and passionate, independent, value nature,
and protective and defensive of our territory. When the Spaniards came, the Filipinos became
gamblers, dependent, powerless, corrupt, amnesiacs, disloyal to our “identity”, and indolent.
Being discontent, having continual wars and tolerance, due to slavery, getting fraud from the
Spaniards.  The Filipinos caused this indolence, is the lack of unity among the Filipino people.

How did Rizal and the other Filipino scholars defend the Filipinos against this labeling from
Spain?
Rizal wrote this essay to defend the Filipinos from the charge that they were born
indolent. He admits the existence of indolence among the Filipinos, but it could be attributed to a
number of reasons. He traces its causes to factors such as the climate and social disorders. He
defends the Filipinos by saying that they are by nature not indolent, because in fact, even before
the arrival of Spaniards, Filipinos have been engaged in economic activities such as agriculture
and trade. Indolence therefore has more deeply rooted causes such as abuse and
discrimination.
