Read the passage carefully and then answer the given questions.
1 Technical education practically teaches a man how to earn his
living. Gone are the days when our forefathers lived in a non-

computerized age. Today in the 21 century techniques are needed
to operate machines in farms and factories. So now no country can
survive without them. The only way to alleviate poverty in under 05
developed countries like Pakistan is to produce technicians and,
mechanics through well-planned education.
2 All technically skilled workers not only increase their individual
incomes but also the national income of their country. This
statement is proved by the economic history of all the developed 10
countries like USA, UK, France, Germany, Russia, China and Japan
where we find perfectly job-oriented demand-driven and competency
-based system of technical education. The enlargement of the
quality of their production and the improvement of its quality stand
indebted to their skilled manpower. 15
3 Pakistan emerged on the map of the world in 1947. Like a new
born baby, Pakistan needed support from every nook and corner. It
inherited almost nothing from its colonial rulers. In 1960, i.e. after 13
years of its inception, it was able to inaugurate its first Government
Polytechnic institute at Rawalpindi under its first five-year plan 1955 20
– 1960. Private polytechnic institute began to be set-up since 1990.
4 Today almost every district in Pakistan has some technical
and vocational institutions. They are producing assistant engineers,
mechanics, foremen and supervisors. All these centres of technical
education have been satisfying the growing demands of our 25
industrialists for technicians, mechanics and skilled personnel.

5 The expansion of our old industrial units and the establishment
of new ones will become possible only when Pakistan possesses
the required number of fully trained apprentices through the network
of technical education which is as important for Pakistan’s economy 30 as
is the backbone for man. As we are permanently at war with India
so our defence industry constantly needs especially
skilled technicians.
