Q3 Envi Sci Lesson 4

Natural disasters can have severe consequences for humans and the environment. They are caused by natural processes like climate change, tectonic plate movement, deforestation, and pollution. When disasters occur, they can negatively impact communities through damage to infrastructure, increased disease, food and water scarcity, and emotional trauma. Understanding the causes and effects of natural disasters is important for developing strategies to build resilience against future events.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

QUARTER 3: LESSON 4
Explain the causes and effects of natural disasters to humans and the environment.
Describe how human interactions with the environment can be beneficial or harmful

“Sometimes it takes a natural disaster to reveal a social disaster.”

Jim Wallis
CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF NATURAL DISASTERS TO HUMANS AND ENVIRONMENT
A natural disaster can be defined as a significant adverse event resulting from the earth’s natural processes. Natural
disasters often have severe consequences for many people and also for animals and plants.

UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT

Few believe that when the stars and planets are in a malevolent position, bad events may happen. No person would want
to experience unlucky events or even disastrous events. However, in reality, disasters are the impact of natural and
man- made events that influence our lives and the environment surrounding us, not from superstitious sources. Any
disaster can be classified either as ‘natural’ or ‘man-made.’ The most common natural disasters known to humankind
are thunderstorms, severe rainfalls, cyclones, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and floods causing loss of life and
destruction to property.

ACTIVITY 1: Flash News!

Direction: Identify the natural calamities described by the weather anchor on the local news.
1. It is a frightening funnel and a swirling vortex crashing fields and houses! ______________________________
2. It is a dark monstrous shadow made from overflowing rain, moving towards streets, getting inside homes.
______________________________
3. It is crust- shaking, seismic seizure creating terrifying sounds in the ground while hanging objects swings.
_________________________________________
4. It is an intense, hot, molten mayhem with molten lava! ___________________
5. It brings roaring sounds, as it moves down from the mountain, it leaves debris, and a few survivors. _________

Causes for Natural Disasters

1. Global warming leads to an increase in temperature of oceans, which in turn leads to more and
stronger typhoons and tropical storms as their energy from the seawater.
2. Natural activities in the earth’ crust. Natural processes can cause tension inside the earth’s crust which
are sometimes released through earthquakes.
3. Mining Activities. It is controversial whether mining activities can cause natural disasters. Some
scientists blame mining for landslides and soil and mountain erosions. Mining can thus potentially
contribute to the emergence of natural disasters, although it is not a main driver. Landslides occur
naturally due to heavy rainfalls and flash floods.
4. Deforestation. Forests usually prevent floods and droughts since they balance and hold back natural
groundwater resources. By deforestation, the ground is no longer covered and thus the probability for
floods and droughts increases dramatically.
5. Air pressure. There is a connection between the air pressure and some natural disasters like
hurricanes, heavy rains and thunderstorms.
6. Ocean currents. Changing ocean currents can lead to a change in the ocean temperature which in
turn can harm or even kill large populations of fish and other sea animals and plants.
7. Pollution. Since our nature is a quite sensitive organism, pollutions of all sorts may lead to an
imbalance of the earth which in turn may create natural disasters of several sorts.

EFFECTS
Environmental issues. Hurricanes and other storms can destroy the lives and also the livelihood of many
people, especially of those who live near the coast since they are also in danger of tsunamis. Moreover,
draughts may lead to a migration of many people who just will no longer be able to make their living in their
home since there is not enough water left to grow plants. Natural disasters not only have dramatic effects on
humans but they also destroy the habitat of many animals and plants which may in the worst case even
become extinct.

Public health issues and diseases. Natural disasters often destroy many important facilities that are meant
to keep living conditions stable. If these facilities are destroyed, there will likely be an increase in diseases
since the hygienic conditions dropped as a consequence of the natural disaster.
Making things worse, natural disasters often also destroy hospitals and other medical facilities. This means not
only the likelihood of diseases increases due to lower hygienical standards, also the supply of medicines will
be more difficult. As a result, it is more likely that people will not be able to recover from their diseases.

Food and water scarcity

Another effect of natural disasters can be a scarcity of resources, which is especially severe when it comes to
the supply of food. If large areas of land have been destructed by natural disasters, farmers will no longer be
able to harvest enough crops or to raise enough cattle in order to meet the demand. Thus, the local population
is likely to suffer from starvation. Natural water sources like rivers or lakes may be polluted and thus the water
supply will be decreased dramatically. A scarcity of water supply will be especially severe when droughts hit
areas for a long period of time.

Emotional shocks
Apart from physical injuries, many people will also suffer from mental conditions since they will not be able to
process and handle the consequences of natural disasters appropriately.
Many people lose their children or other family members to natural disasters which will shock them emotionally
for quite a long time or even for their whole life. It will take a long time for many people to recover from these
kinds of emotional horrible events.

ACTIVITY 2: NATURAL DISASTER AND ME!

Assess your environment. Ask help from parents. What natural disaster may affect you, your family and the
whole community. List only two of the many natural disasters
that may come in your lifetime. Use the table below to answer this.

Natural Disaster Description Causes Effects

REFLECTION: Do you think your actions to the environment contribute to one of this disasters?
