Prime Number
Prime number: A prime number is an integer that is divisible only by itself and 1.
a) The first twenty six (26) prime numbers are: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59,
61, 67, 71, 73, 79, 83, 89, 97 and 101. There are infinitely many prime numbers.

c) In the range of 1 – 100, there are 25 primes. In 1 – 50, it is 15. ( 1 – 50 = 15, 51 – 100 = 10

are 21 primes.

numbers can be primes.
e) All prime numbers except 2 and 5 end in 1, 3, 7 or 9, since numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 are multiples of 2
and numbers ending in 0 or 5 are multiples of 5. Similarly, all prime numbers above 3 are of the 6n - 1 form or
6n + 1, because all other
er numbers are divisible by 2 or 3.
Finite Series
Series: If the terms of a sequence are connected successively by + sign, a series is obtained. Such as, 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 +
....... is a series. Among the series, two important series are arithmetic series and geometric series.
1. Arithmetic series: If the difference between any term and its antecedent term is always equal, the series
is called arithmetic series. Example: 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 9 + 11 is an arithmetic series. In an arithmetic series,
the first term and the common difference are generally denoted by a and d respectively. Then by
definition, if the first term is a,, the second term is a + d, the third term is a + 2d,, etc. Hence, the series will
be a + (a + d) + (a + 2d) +......
2. Geometric series: If the ratio of any term and its antecedent term of any series is always equal i.e., if any
term divided by its antecedent term, the quotient is always equal, the series is called a geometric series
and the quotient is called common ratio. Example: 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32 is a geometricmetric series.

Formulae of Series:
1. Arithmetic series: Let,, in a series the first term = a, common difference = d,, last term = l, number of terms
= n, nth term be tn, then

Determiners
2.1 Few and Little: Few and little have the same meaning, but few is used before plural count nouns and little is used
before non-count nouns.

Incorrect: My brother used to help me a lot, but now he gives me a few advice.
Correct: My brother used to help me a lot, but now he gives me a little advice.

Incorrect: He had to balance his account very carefully because he had few money.
Correct: He had to balance his account very carefully because he had little money.
2.2 A Little & A Few/Only a Little & Only a Few: The difference between little and a little is the point of view. Little or
few means 'not a lot'. A little or a few means 'some.' 'A little' is used before non-count
count nouns and ''a few' is used before
plural count nouns. In the same way 'only a little' and 'only a few' is used before non-count
non count and count nouns respectively.

2.3 Much and Many: Much and many have the same meaning, but many is used before plural count nouns and much is
used before non-count nouns.
Incorrect: The letter was short because there wasn't many news.
Correct: The letter was short because there wasn't much news.
Incorrect: Rasel and Rupa don't have much children.
Correct: Rasel and Rupa don't have many children.

2.4 A Large (Small) Amount & A large(Small) Number of: A Large Amount & A large Number of have the same
meaning, but A large Number of is used before plural count nouns and A Large Amount is used before non
non-count nouns.

Incorrect: You will need a small number of clothing to go the party.


Correct: You will need a small amount of clothing to go the party.

Incorrect: We don't have time for a large amount of interruptions.


Correct: We don't have time for a large number of interruptions.

2.5 One of the & Some of the: One means one of a group. Some means several of the group.
Note: Remember that 'One of the' & 'Some of the' both are used before plural count nouns
nouns.
'Some of the' is also used before non-count
non nouns.

Correct: One of the major fields of study that Maria is considering is Banking.

2.6 Almost all of the & Most of the: Both means 'all except a few', but 'almost all of the' includes more. Both are used
before plural count and non-count
count nouns.

Note: Almost + all/all of the is mandatory. Don't use almost singly without all/all of the.
'Most of+ the' is mandatory. Don't use Most of singly without the.

Incorrect: Almost the states have a sales tax.

2.7 Sufficiency: Enough with Nouns: Enough means sufficient. It can be used before or after plural count nouns and non
non-
count nouns.
Note: Dont use as & the with enough.
Enough is never used with singular count noun.

2.8 Sufficiency: Enough with Adjectives: Enough with adjectives means sufficiently. Enough is used after adjective,
never before it. Correct structure is 'enough + infinitive'.

2.9 Consecutive Order: One/Another/the
Another/the Other: Often, correctly using the word other can be confusing. The word
another and other are not specific, while the other is specific. If the subject is understood then other can be used as a
pronoun. If the understood noun is a plural count noun then other becomes others.. (Note: other CANNOT be plural if
followed by a noun.) Look at the following examples.

This knife is dull. Please give me another.


(an + other + singular noun = any other knife – not specific)

This knife is dull. Please give me the other.


(the other + singular noun = the only other option – specific)

This cake is delicious. Other cakes are delicious also. OR This cake is delicious. Others are delicious also.

(other + plural noun = other cakes: not specific) Since the subject is understood from the first sentence, you can omit the
plural noun “cakes” in the second sentence and pluralize other to others.

These apples are bad. I want the other apples. OR These apples are bad. I want the others.
(the other + plural noun = other apples: specific) Since the subject is
is understood from the first sentence, you can omit the
plural noun “apples” in the second sentence and pluralize the other to the others.
You can also substitute other + one (for a singular noun) and other + ones (for a plural noun.)

2.10 Numerical Order: Remember that, 'the' is used with an ordinal number before a singular count noun to express
numerical order. A cardinal number is used after a singular count noun to express numerical order. The is used before the
ordinal number, not the noun itself. Again the is used before the noun, not the cardinal number.
