Factor Affecting & Values of Weight Management

There are numerous factors that can influence body weight, both within and outside of an individual's control. Some uncontrollable factors include genetics, gender, age, and medical conditions, while controllable factors are diet, physical activity levels, stress, hormones, and lifestyle environment. Ultimately, weight gain occurs when energy intake from food exceeds energy expenditure from metabolic rate and physical activity. Maintaining a healthy weight is a complex issue affected by both genetic and environmental factors.

Factor affecting & Values of Weight Management

In the world we live in now with more fast food outlets, bigger portions and energy
saving devices. There are numerous factors that can influence body weight. The individual
has no control over some of these factors, including developmental determinants, genetic
makeup, gender, and age. Other factors that influence body weight over which the individual
has potential control include level of physical activity, diet, and some environmental and
social factors.

While there are many factors involved, an increase in body weight always results from
an imbalance between energy intake (food) and energy expenditure (through a combination
of metabolic rate, generating body heat and being active).

1. A previous history of weight loss.

The effects of weight cycling – frequent large gains and losses –
on long term health are unclear, but there are associations between
the number of failed weight loss attempts and current body weight, as
well as health risks.
2. Life Stages
Weight gain is common, although not inevitable, at various life
stages – for example, after pregnancy, and during menopause.
3. Family, work and social environments
Family, work and social environments can influence weight gain and the inability to
lose weight. Genetic influences. Genetic predisposition can influence the amount and rate at
which weight is gained and lost.
4. Stress
Stress may need to be considered as a factor that can cause either
weight gain or weight loss, depending on the person’s reaction to stress.
5. Medical conditions and treatments
Certain medical conditions, for example, hypothyroidism, are
known causes of being overweight. Certain medications can increase weight gain (in
particular, corticosteroids, anti-psychotics, antidepressants, anti-epileptics, insulin).
6. Genetic Makeup
There may be things we have to deal with, and genetic factors will influence the way
our body functions. Some people have genetic predispositions that make it easier for
them to lose weight and keep it off.
7. Metabolic Rate
The metabolic rate is also a factor that’s related to genetics. The metabolic rate
defines how efficiently your body burns calories, whether at rest or in active state.
8. Activity Level
Physical activity burns calories, and although
resistance training doesn’t typically burn as many
calories as cardio exercise, it builds muscle, which
increases the metabolic rate.
9. Hormones
Our endocrine system and the hormones that drive
our bodies are such an overlooked yet essentially important factor when it comes to
weight loss. Many of us are out of balance when it comes to hormones and this alone
can prevent weight loss. It is important to balance the hormones through eating and
lifestyle factors to maximize our health.
10. What You Eat or diet
Diet, in large part, determines weight of our body. There is no
exact right or wrong way to eat but there certainly are foods that
are less healthful, sugar for example. Inevitably if we consume too
much sugar, our whole body is going to get thrown out of whack
and this is going to affect all the other functions in our body.

The brief review of factors influencing body weight presented that maintaining
a healthy body weight is an extremely complex issue. Maintenance of fitness and
appropriate body-fat is affected by each individual's genetics, developmental history,
physiology, age, physical activity level, environment, diet, ethnicity, and social
background.
