ABSTRACT

The main purpose of internship is exposing the students to the practical world, to relate
theoretical knowledge acquired in the university with practical vacation. This report mainly
concerns on the activities I have done and the overall benefits I have gained during my internship
period in Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC). During my journey I able to see two different
fields: graphics design (video and picture editing) and software development.

With my group members we were able to develop android application for security and
communication purposes, we also develop a webpage to insert the data needed for the android
application. And I also create wall image for news with the graphic designer, in addition slide for
my report using Photoshop and After Effect.

CHAPTER ONE
ETHIOPIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION
1.0 Introduction
The Ethiopian broadcasting corporation is responsible for building up of image and national
consensus through an interactive broadcast media that provides timely, informative, educative and
entertaining programs utilizing state of the art media technology. The technology department,
which is part of this media house, is working on software development, graphics design (video and
picture editing), computer and camera maintenance also adjusting satellites and networking.

In particular, the network division emphasizes on networking each office to communicate

and integrate each other, to provide Ethernet accesses to different office staffs, to secure our
network and documents of our institution, to maintain and expand the existing network systems,
and study the future plan of our network. Radio broadcasting is the transmission or signals
distribution of sound using the electrical energy. Television is a widely used telecommunication
medium for transmitting and receiving moving images, either monochromatic ("black and white")
or color, usually accompanied by sound. The word Television is derived from mixed Latin and
Greek roots, meaning "far sight": Greek tale far and Latin Visio sight (from video, vis- to see or
to view in the first person).

1.1 Brief History

Ethiopians introduced for TV systems before the establishment of Ethiopia television in the
exhibition organized by BBC. BBC displayed two image art icon cameras and four monitors. The
display was presented through the closed-circuit TV system (CCTV). The TV exhibition by the
BBC faced condemnation from the public as they conceived it as work of the devil

The first Ethiopian television establishment is proposed by Phillips Ethiopia and Thomson
Television. This proposal promised to provide equipment and train manpower with an annual
budget of 247,000 Birr. After exchange of many letters, the proposal was presented to Haileselasse
the 1st on July 29, 1956 E.C. and a permit was given. Decision was made to open the TV station
on the fourth floor of the Addis Ababa City Administration whose construction was due to be
completed and Ethiopian Television was established in 1967 E.C. with assistance from the British
firm, Thomson Color television broadcast began in 1982E.C. in commemoration of the founding

of Workers’ Party of Ethiopia (WPE). The current structure and goals of ETV were established
1987E.C. with Proclamation 114/87. In 2007E.C. ETV changed its name to EBC then EBC is
established as corporation.

As mentioned earlier, the television station was established by agreement between the Lord
Thomson Company and the Ethiopian government while majority of the equipment were provided
by Philips.

The development progress is continued, Ethiopian television till 1979E.C. had no mobile studio.
But with the assistance of the Hungary government in 1979E.C. and Poland in 1981E.C. the mobile
studios began operation but those OB vans were outdated. Then ETV bought two OB vans from a
British company called Crow of Road in 1984E.C. and started mobile operation with its somewhat
improved mobile studios.

At the very end of 1984E.C, and with the mobile studios bought from abroad in connection with
10th revolutionary celebration, the station begun color TV transmission. Those mobile studios
were in use till the station got transferred to the building in which it is housed now. In 1997E.C.
the station started its transmission with its modern analogue studio bought from a British based
company called BTS.

The three mobile studios were well equipped; two of them with two cameras each, and one with
a single camera. The three mobile studios were all analog; but through the digitalization effort
underway, the station realized its dream of acquiring digital mobile studios.

2
Internship Report

The 4th digitalized mobile studio was bought four years back now. Now the station operates with
4 OB Vans equipped with 18 cameras in total. One of these four studios is an HD technology
studio capable of utilizing nine cameras at a moment.

Since the recent times the obvious broadcast transmission was only antenna based, that the
transmission was very problematic because of sky scrapers and high-altitude spots in between OB
vans and the station at the head quarter. Now the company become more modernize, the studios
organized in SD and HD output data format and for the future the company planned to have digital
transmission at all.

CHAPTER TWO
OVERALL INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
2.1 Entrance to the company
The university Apprenticeship program is planned to create a good interaction between
Universities and industries and also create students that have the capability of facing and solving
practical problems. There are limited company for Electrical and Computer Engineers and most of
organized companies are found in Addis Ababa Therefore we started to figure out which company
is helpful for our internship experience and EBC was on our list because EBC is big television that
have wide network area in Electrical Engineering, Computer stream and any other fields(graphics
design, video editing and so on) where we can take part in big projects and gain good experience
and also it is in the city center made it easier for transportation. EBC accept our internship letter
and gave us acceptance letter.

2.2 our Activities in EBC

our activities in EBC was quite different because we were able to participate in two different
departments those are graphics design field and software development filed. In graphics design,
we were able to know and work with Adobe After Effect, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe illustrator,
and Cinema 4D(C4D). In software development, we and our group members work on software
project that uses for EBC security system and also work with a web to update the data to the
software. The detail about the project will be discussed in the coming chapter.

2.2.1 Graphic design

Television is a visual medium, the ability to show moving images allows us to tell stories in a way
that print and radio journalism cannot match. Because we depend on video to bring our stories to
life, it can be a challenge when these pictures are of poor quality, have little relevance to the day’s
news, are plain boring, or all three. Worse yet is when not one frame of video is available. The
purpose of graphic design is wide and vast but some of them are
➢ Deliver facts
➢ Explain concepts.
➢ Illustrate stories in a visually engaging way. (Understand Story)

6

Graphics educates and informs, graphics needs to explain in visual form what words alone cannot
achieve.
Filds in graphic design
In a field of graphics design there are different catagorys some of them are.

Video editing
In a video editing section news, programs, advert and movies produced. In order to perfom the
editing task the editors use differt sets of software some of them are
• Adobe After Efects
• Adobe Primeier pro
• Sony vegas
The final output of those software will be broadcast to those who watch the program at home or
somewhere else.

This field of the graphics design creates 3D representation of some model example design the Renaissance
Dam 3D model, since the dam is not completed, when they want to make a news on the dam, they will
show the 3D model of it. To create the model, they use different software’s like

• Maya 3D
• Sketch up
• Blender

2.2.2 Software development

This team of the company works under information communication technology department
and have the following responsibility’s

• Develop new software that ate useful for the company

• Updating software’s that are already developed

This part of the company is where we spent most of our internship time. As a result, we were
able to develop A system for the company the system is mainly focused on Security system. We
will discuss our project in the coming chapter

2.3 Work flow

As I mentioned above, I had the chance to work in two major fields in Ethiopian Broadcasting
corporation (EBC) those are
➢ Graphic design and

CHAPTER THREE

OVERALL BENEFITS OF INTERSHIP

During these four months of our internship program at EBC (Ethiopian broad casting) mass media agency
we obtain so many benefits we can able to understand our objective of our stream how it is broad and
essential for the planet. More than anything we can easily familiar with some of computer languages
which we learned in university they are worth to understand and read them. We think those who advance
the furthest in life tend to be those who acquire knowledge at both ends of the spectrum and acquire it
in both theoretical and practical knowledge ways.

3.1 In terms of improving practical skills

We are benefited from improving practical knowledge and skills we acquire some specific techniques that
become the tools of our trade we sits closer to our actual stream carrier also to real world because there
is some things we can only learn through doing and experiencing .An internship program helps us to relate
the theoretical study with practical work. It also helped us to know different material such as: route,
switch, different types of cable…etc.

3.2 In terms of upgrading theoretical knowledge

The following are some points that have improved by theoretical knowledge

• It has a big role in upgrading theoretical knowledge

• Some confusing study in theoretical knowledge was solved by this practice
• Enhance and strength our resume to know more about the course
• Stimulate new interest on academic courses.

3.3 In terms of improving communication skill

Good communication is significant for anyone who is at work site to gain the required benefits. We gained
the following benefits due to communication skills:

• Get information about each piece of work

• Understand the behavior of the worker
• Meet different person get a good social interaction
• Get information about each work
• Solve different problems together

12
Internship Report

3.4 in terms of improving team playing skill

When it comes to working in a team, not everyone is cut out for it. But team work is one of the most vital
competencies in most forms of employment and without it companies tend to fail. Being intern have lots
of benefits and one of these benefits, it will improve your team playing skills. As we told you before at the
beginning of our intern, we were told to choose a project and do it in a group. From the selection of the
project to the final submission of the project we have done all the works together. We select title, discuss
on the project, add some features, write the codes and develop the application and website all together
by dividing them to all our group members. As we all know doing projects require man power to make
effective work in short period of time. so, in all the days of our internship we were doing everything as a
team. We aimed at the goal of our project and we were running to hit that goal and finish our work and
show to our supervisor as a team. We divide all the works to everyone in the group and all of us were
trying to finish the work one the time that we have decided to finish. In all the days we have seen that
doing things or a work as a team will make it simple, better and great. We have seen that when you are
doing things as a team, you will have responsibility to finish the work, you will help each other, when
some0ne is tired the other will help, you will have a better idea more than being alone and it will minimize
the energy, cost and the time of finishing the project. We have developed the team playing skill through
this internship and we have seen all the benefits of creating a team spirit, running as a team and finishing
as a team.

3.5 in terms of improving leadership skill

Throughout the project our supervisor was the leader of the team and we have seen how he was leading
us to make things smoothly, how to make decisions, how to see everyone equally, how to help others and
how to solve problems. We have developed: -

3.5.1 confidence
To build a thriving career, you need confidence. after all, believing in your own skills and abilities will help
you take risks, tackle challenges, and put yourself out there for new opportunities. You need to have a
confidence to take a risk and lead.

3.5.2 A willingness to ask for help

As counterintuitive as it seems, humility is just as essential for leaders as confidence. as a leader, you will
not know everything so it’s important to be approachable and open new ideas and ways of doing things.

3.5.3 Clear communication

When you think of the quintessential leader, you probably imagine them standing at a podium. The most
impressive leaders stand out because of their ability to communicate clearly and professionally, especially
in front of groups.

3.5.4 Relationship building

The ability to build relationship across teams and pay grades is essential to become a leader.

3.5.5 problem- solving skills

Every career has a challenge that require serious problem-solving skills. Successful leaders don’t buckle
under weight they overturn conventional thinking and come up with solutions. But learning how to solve
problems in a corporate environment, rather than classrooms, doesn’t come naturally to most of us, which
is internship give participants a range of experience solving problems in multiple situations.

13
Internship Report

By participating in this internship, we cultivate leadership qualities that will serve us through our entire
career.

3.6 in terms of improving work ethics

One of the most important things is having ethics. In all places, every job, every work and every activity
have its own ethics that needs to be kept and fulfilled. Through our internship we have seen many work
ethics that the place requires.

3.6 .1 punctuality
Being punctual is the most important and the basic one, because to work and apply other ethics’ you need
to be there on time and do what you are meant to do on that day.

3.6 .2 dependability and responsibility

Being dependable and responsible as an intern or employee shows that you value your job and that you
are responsible in keeping up projects and keeping them informed of the things that they should know
about.

3.6 .3 possessing a positive attitude

Employers seek employees or internes who can take the initiative and have the motivation to get the job
done in a reasonable period of time. A positive attitude gets the work done and motivate others to do the
same without dwelling on the challenges that inevitably come up in any job. It is the enthusiastic employee
who creates an environment of good will and who provides a positive role model for others. A positive
attitude is something that is most valued and that also makes the job more pleasant and fun to go to each
other.

3.6 .4 honesty and integrity

Employers value employees who maintain a sense of honesty and integrity above all else. Good
relationships are built on trust. When working for an employer they want to know that they can trust
what you say and what you do.

3.6 .5 self-motivated
Employers look for employees who require little supervision and direction to get the work done in a timely
and professional manner.

3.6 .6 professionalism
Employers value employees who exhibit professional behavior at all times. Professional behavior includes
learning every aspect of a job and doing it to the best of one’s ability.

we have mentioned some of the above work ethics that we have learned and gained from our internship
period. we have tried to fulfill all those ethics’ and we have seen they all are necessary to work and get
the job done on the right time and in pleasant and smooth way.

CHAPTER FOUR
SYSTEM DESIGN AND ANALAYSIS

4.1 MOTIVATION/SIGNIFICANCE
In Ethiopian broadcasting corporation (EBC) to bring a laptop and other materials and to take them out
you need to have a license paper that the company gave you and the guards check that paper every time
you go in and out. This process makes the security system boring and time taking. This is the one that
initiates us to develop a security system to the company that can solve this boring and time-consuming
system. The other thing that motivates us to develop this system is their notification system we have seen
many times they use notification boards and lift and stair walls to post every notification like night shift
programs, funeral occasions, meetings… etc. after observing these problems we decide to develop a web
based android application system that can work in local network and can work for both security and
notification system because we have taken courses and do projects that can solve these problems.

4.2 Objectives:
4.2.1 General objective:
The overall purpose (objective) of this project is to develop a web-based android application security and
notification system for Ethiopian broadcasting corporation (EBC) for security and notification purpose by
using different hardware and software tools that are used to develop this website.

4.2.2 Specific objectives:

✓ To design and develop an interesting, simple and good security system
✓ To provide easy and digital notification system for the company.
✓ To minimize the time that is consumed with guards.
✓ To maximize the strength of the security system of the company.
✓ To make the notification system easy and reachable for every staff and customer of the company.

4.3 SCOPE
This project is entitled with “ETHIOPIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION SECURITY
AND NOTIFICATION SYSTEM.” To make the security and the notification system simple, easy, and
good. The emphasis is on the design, development and analysis of this web based android application
system that can be used in every company for security and notification purpose.

4.4 Methodology of the project

To complete this project in satisfactory and successful way some steps are followed to carry out different
tasks that are used to do this project. Different literatures were revised to this project and different data was
collected about conditions and design parameters that are used to develop this security and notification
system. Based on these parameters and conditions the web based android security and notification system
was designed. Some software’s were selected to develop this web based android application system layout
and design.

4.5 Material Requirements for The Project

4.5.1 Hardware Requirement
We have used hardware devices like:

✓ Personal computer
✓ Mobile phone
✓ External disks drives

4.5.2 Software Requirement

Here we have used different software’s to design the layout, to build the pages, to do some graphics like
the logo and other pictures, as a server and to write and edit texts.

We have used software tools like:

✓ Android studio
✓ Visual studio
✓ Xampp control panel v 3.2.3
✓ Adobe Photoshop
✓ MS- word
✓ Firefox and chrome browsers

4.6 System design and Modeling

4.6.1 Use case Diagram of the system
Use case diagrams are diagrams that show and capture the functional requirement of the new proposed
system. Each use case diagram describes a behaviorally related sequence of dialogue between the user and
the system.

Internship Report

4.6.1.1 Actors
In the use cases an actor interacts with the system to perform a piece of meaningful work that helps them
to achieve a goal and has access to define their overall role in the system and the scope of their action.
Depending on the above explanation, actors in this system are the following:
Administrator: - person who have full privilege on the system, so who manages the overall the system like
he/she add the user, generate the QR code, post every notification and manage every step of the system.
User: - a person that logs in to the system and read the notifications that the company posted. This user is
may be a stuff or a customer or an intern.
Guard: - this is another user of the system that uses the system to check items that belongs to the company.
This user has its own account and logs in to the system and scan every laptop weather it is registered or not
and he/she can also read notifications.
4.6.1.2 System Use case

A use case describes a sequence of actions that provide a measurable value to an actor. In other words, it
shows a way in which a real-world actor interacts with the system. In order to identify use-cases the team
examined the needed of users, the main tasks of users, what users inform the system and what the system
informs users.

4.6.2 Sequence Diagram

A sequence diagram is an interaction diagram that shows how processes operate with one another and in
what order. It is a constructed of message sequence Chart. A sequence diagram shows object interactions
arrangement in time sequence. It depicts the objects and classes involved in the scenario and the sequence

of messages exchange between the objects needed to carry out the functionality of the scenario. Sequence
diagram are typically associated with use case realization in the Logical View of the system under
development. Sequence diagram are sometime called even diagrams or event scenarios.

5.8 QR (QUICK RESPONCE)

QR code (abbreviated Quick Response Code) is the trademark for a type of matrix barcode. It is machine
readable optical label that contains information. QR code often contains data for a locator identifier, or
tracker that points to a website or application. QR code uses four standardizes encoding modes (numeric,
alphanumeric, byte/binary) to store data efficiently.

CHAPTER SIX

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

6.1 Conclusion
EBC Radio and TV agency plays a great role for the government and the society. It is governmental
organization. It used to transmit information from government to society and the idea from the society
to the government. It also provides many information, entertainment, feature of the society life.

This internship report contains the overall experiences that we gained from the internship program. We
conclude that the program is very good to know the real- world life and comparing with theoretical
subject. During the internship period we have seen the real working environment. Leadership style,
management system and their interaction as well as the weakness of the company. The company uses
many standardized apparatuses as well as not using it effectively due to knowledge of installation and not
upgrading the status. In such case a company loss a price and will be non-competitive because the price
of each individual apparatus is much costly rather than the use. And it is bridge to upgrade the theoretical
knowledge into practical skill. Overall, we are very happy with our internship period to gain many valuable
experiences from this internship.

We also understood how live transmission from event place can be done. We were very good in
preforming our work task. Unfortunately, we had faced many challenges like lack of internet, unable to
communicate with our carriers and world.

WE wish and hope that this company will be one of the East African broadcasting stations if it is modifying
also correct his problem and increase their carrier and time of program.

6.2 Recommendation
6.2.1 Recommendation for the company
I recommended the following to the company EBC Radio and Television agency.

• Should be permitted to practice and do project for internship students in the agency technical lab
or store.
• Should have a professional broadcasting technology and separated workshop room or lab.
• It is recommended to be ready for internship students by preparing project tasks and motivations
to better solution for real world problem which concern mass media.
• They have to be all the time ready to treat and give information early.
• They have to update their television modulation encoder and transmission bandwidth.
• To improve and continue their good interaction and respect with each other and apparent
students.
• The have to increase the time and quality of broadcasting program especially in TV so they can
get a much more end users.

6.2.2 Recommendation for the university

The internship program plays a great role to relate student theoretically knowledge with practical. But
there are some problems or challenges faced students. Some companies have no understanding about
internship program, thus my recommendation for the internship period is firstly universities must
introduce about the aim of internship to all companies in order to recognize what are the duties and rights
of the student. My university should have a close co-ordination with the hosting companies. The
department has to send the student to hosting company on time for this internship program.
