The document discusses the origins and history of Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving that kicks off the holiday shopping season. It began as a term used by Philadelphia police in the 1950s to describe the heavy traffic and crowded streets. Stores offer significant deals and discounts to attract shoppers, hoping they will also buy other items, though there are not enough deals for all shoppers. While most events are safe, some have turned violent due to large crowds and competition for limited deals. Black Friday has become a major shopping day both in the US and internationally.

The day after Thanksgiving is the start of

the holiday shopping season.

Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday, so

the day after is a Friday. This day has

come to be known as Black Friday. It has

been the busiest shopping day of the year

since 2005.

The situation can be tense. Some Black

Black Friday events are safe and fun.
Still, if you plan on going, expect large
crowds and a bit of shoving.

As ‘Black Friday’ became more popular in

the early eighties, one “explanation” for the
event became that this day represented the
point in the year when retailers begin to
make a profit, going from being "in the red"
(meaning to be in debt) to "in the black"
(meaning to be free of debt).
Black Friday is not an official holiday in the
United States, but in some states government
employees are given the day off. Schools and
non-retail employees are normally given
Thanksgiving Thursday and Black Friday as
public holidays.
Most major retailers offer promotional sales
with big discounts, and it has been the
busiest shopping day every year since 2005.
In 2014, sales revenues for Black Friday
reached a whopping $11.6 billion, falling
slightly to $10.4 in 2015. In 2013, overall
spending from Thanksgiving Thursday up to
Cyber Monday topped $56 billion!
