DESIGN STATEMENT
An old saying tells that 'no man is an island’ , it expresses the idea that human beings do badly when isolated from
others and need to be part of a community in order to thrive. In a community housing that is painted as “cold &
unsociable” by many occupants from an informal housing to subdivisions, this saying contradicts itself as ‘everyone is
an island’. These problems are addressed through the concept of “KABIBI : Us in the middle”. The word kabibi means
shell or an outer rigid layer of an object, in this concept that object is the users being in safekeeping inside it. The
clubhouse is envisioned to be a platform for social interaction that can cause warm and hospitable environment within
the community; by accommodating intergenerational users with different beliefs and background. Clubhouse and
open space is designed to serve as a kabibi, an avenue for positive recreation that creates not islands, but bridges.

FLEXIBILITY
The concept also made the clubhouse usage flexible. Aside from it can
cater activities like indoor yoga, party events, unwinding and many more,
it can also serve as a temporary emergency facility in times of heavy
flooding that is frequent in the location.

physical safety from the basketball
court’s active area.

Although separated in nature, the areas


are combined in essence. The structure
is designed as a see through and
breathing entity to not restrict the views
and ventilation, as well as to maintain
the sense of a public space for the
visiting users.
