12 SEISINV Course2021 Stochastic Inversion New

1. Stochastic inversion generates multiple equally probable impedance models that all fit the observed seismic data, providing estimates of uncertainty, unlike deterministic inversion which provides a single model. 2. Bayesian inversion uses a prior distribution of impedance values and likelihoods based on forward modeling of seismic data to obtain a posterior distribution of impedance models given the data. 3. Conditional simulation can provide multiple equiprobable representations of a subsurface property like impedance while reproducing the global characteristics and uncertainties of the input seismic data.

Conditional simulation

Creates multiple maps which

collectively provide an estimate
of local and global uncertainty

The distribution of values at a

particular coordinate has:
(i) a mean equal to the kriged
estimate for that location
(ii) a spread that is given by the
kriging variance at that location
Features of conditional simulation

Reproduces the global characteristics of the source data (the source

data points, the histogram of input data values, and covariances)

Can provide uncertainty estimates for any function of response values

in any sub-domain of the study area

The most widely available procedure for conditional simulation is known

as Gaussian Sequential Simulation (GSS/SGS)
