This document discusses types of flames, fire extinguishment theory, methods of extinguishment, characteristics of flammable materials, and classification of fire extinguishers. It describes luminous and non-luminous flames, laminar and turbulent flames. The fire extinguishment theory states there are three ways to put out a fire: reduce temperature, eliminate the fuel source, or stop the chemical reaction. Common extinguishment methods are by temperature reduction, fuel removal, oxygen dilution, and chemical inhibition. Fire extinguishers are classified by class (A, B, C, D, K) based on the type of fire they can extinguish.

Flame- is the visible (light emitting) part of a fire. Types of Flame According to Color and Completeness of Combustion • Luminous Flame (reddish-orange) - It produces soot because it is a product of incomplete combustion • Non- luminous Flame- bluish - It does not deposit soot because it is a product of complete combustion Based on Smoothness • Laminar Flame (smooth flame) - A particle follows a smooth path through a gaseous flame • Turbulent Flame (rough flame) - Those having unsteady, irregular swirls and eddies The Fire Extinguishment Theory The Fire Extinguishment Theory states that “to extinguish a fire, interrupt or eliminate the supply of any or all of the elements of fire.” Fire can be extinguished by reducing/ lowering the temperature, eliminating the fuel supply, or by stopping the chemical chain reaction. 4 General Methods of Fire Extinguishment
1. Extinguishment by Temperature Reduction
- Cooling the temperature of the fire environment - usually done by using water
2. Extinguishment by Fuel Removal
Elimination of the fuel supply/ source which may be done by: • stopping the flow of liquid fuel • preventing the production of flammable gas • removing the solid fuel at the fire path • allowing the fire to burn until the fuel is consumed 3. Extinguishment by Oxygen Dilution - reduction of oxygen concentration at the burning area 4. Extinguishment by Chemical Inhibition - it utilizes the use of fire extinguisher to interrupt the production of flame Characteristics of Combustible Materials • Flammable/Inflammable- something that catches fire and burns easily. • Non-flammable- something that do not catches fire easily Fire Extinguisher - a portable device used to extinguish or control small fires Types of Fire Extinguisher • Class A Extinguisher (water)- it will put fires in ordinary combustible solid materials such as wood and paper. • Class B Extinguisher (foam)- it should be used on fires involving flammable liquids such as grease, gasoline, oil and etc. • Class C Extinguisher (dry chemical)- are suitable for use on electrically energized fires. • Class D Extinguisher (dry powder)- are designed for use on flammable metals • Class K Extinguisher (wet chemical)- used for kitchen fires • As to symbol:
