ACT IV, SCENE I

1. What are Antony, Octavius, and Lepidus doing at the opening of the scene?
They are planning which men must die.

They plan to make reductions to what the citizens will get. Antony used the will to show the generosity of Caesar,
but he won’t follow the will.

Antony’s plan is to give Lepidus a title of high position so they can blame him if things go badly.

ACT IV, SCENE II

4. What practical instructions does Brutus give Cassius about their disagreement? What is unusual about this?
Brutus says they should not argue in front of their enemies. It is unusual because up until now they have been
good friends and haven’t had any arguments.

ACT IV, SCENE III

5. What wrong does Cassius say Brutus has done him?


He says Brutus accused him of corruption and greed.

6. In response, what does Brutus condemn Cassius for doing?


Brutus accuses Cassius of taking bribes and siding with known robbers.

ACT V, SCENE I

Brutus and his army came down from the hills. Brutus is making a show of bravery trying to convince them of his
army’s courage.

16. What does Cassius mean by the following statement? “Flatterers! Now, Brutus, thank yourself;/This tongue had not
offended so today,/If Cassius might have ruled.” (45-47)
Cassius is telling Brutus they wouldn’t be listening to these insults if he had had his way about killing Antony.

17. What ominous sign has Cassius seen that causes him to fear the coming battle?
Two eagles that accompanied the army from Sardis to Philippi have been replaces by ravens, crows, and
hawks, which are birds that symbolize death.

18. What does Brutus say he will do if they lose the battle? Why is he reluctant to do this?
He says he will commit suicide before he will be taken a prisoner in Rome. He finds suicide cowardly and vile.

ACT V, SCENE III

19. What horrible mistake does Cassius make? What is the outcome of this mistake?
Cassius believed that Titinius was taken prisoner after Cassius sent him to see if troops were friend or
enemy. Because he believes Titinius has been taken prisoner and that defeat is imminent, he kills himself.
20. What is Titinius’ reaction to Cassius’ actions?
Titinius kills himself out of grief believing it is the proper thing for a brave Roman to do.

21. What is Brutus’ response to Cassius’ and Titinius’ actions?


Brutus sends the bodies to Thasos so that the soldiers’ morale won’t be affected. Brutus then vows to try their luck
in a second battle.

ACT V, SCENE IV

Lucilius pretends to be Brutus when captured by the soldier. Antony sees him as a “prize” and says he’d
rather have such men as friends than enemies.
