Medium and Technique

Medium refers to the material an artist uses to express their thoughts or feelings in their artwork. The main mediums include pigments in painting, stone, wood, and metal in sculpture. The arts are classified based on their medium as either visual/spatial arts which can be seen and occupy space, like painting and sculpture, auditory/time based arts which can be heard and exist over time, like music and literature, or combined arts which can be both seen and heard like dance and theater. When choosing a medium, artists consider practical factors like material availability and the purpose of the artwork, as well as how the medium can best convey their idea and artistic vision within the medium's characteristics and limitations. An artist's technique involves skill

2 Medium of the Arts part one

Medium of Art

 Medium in art refers to the material or means which the artists uses to objectify his/her feelings
or thought
 Pigments in painting
 Stone, wood and metal in sculpture
 According to Medium, the arts are classified into:
 The visual or space arts- those whose medium can be seen and which occupy
space.
 Two-dimensional arts- painting, drawing, printmaking, and
photography.
 Three-dimensional arts- sculpture, architecture, landscaping,
community planning and furniture-making.
 Auditory or time arts- those whose mediums can be heard, and which exist are
expressed in time. Music and literature.
 Combined arts- that whose mediums can be both seen and heard, and which
exist in both space and time. Dance, the drama, the opera and the movies, and
some music because they are needed to be performed. Also known as
performing arts.

When choosing a medium

 It is the artist’s choice that is usually influenced by such practical considerations as the
availability of material, the use to which the art object will be put, the idea that he wants to
communicate and the nature and special characteristics of the medium itself.
 The artist normally selects the material that can be handle well and that would best suit his
purpose as well as adequately bring out the qualities which he wants it to show.
 The nature of the medium also determines what can be expressed through it. There are certain
limitations.
 Technique is the artist’s knowledge of his/her medium and his/her skill in making it achieve
what he wants it to.
 No artists have the same outcome to their art despite they use the same medium.
 It is also the use of technique that the artist differs from the craftsman. Although both require
technical competence ‘creativity’ enters into the work of an artists compared to a craftsman.
 Artists work is almost always in response to some ‘leap of imagination.’
 Not with the craftsman. He/She merely follows the dictates of the designer and is concerned
exclusively with the manipulation of the material in order to produce the kind of product that
he/she is expected to turn out. He/She is not free to innovate.
