2c. Answers - More Practice On % Composition

1. The document provides examples of calculating percentage composition from chemical formulas and experimental data. 2. Percentage composition is calculated by taking the mass of an element divided by the total mass of the compound, then multiplying by 100. 3. For example, sodium makes up 59.0% of Na2S based on its mass in the chemical formula.

SCH3U1 More Practice on % Composition

Finding Percentage Composition from Formula of Compound

1. Find the percent sodium in Na2S

% Na = mass of Na x 100
mass of Na2S

= 2(23) x 100 = 46 x 100 = 59.0 %

2(23) + 32 78

2. Find the percentage composition of K2CO3

% K = mass of K x 100
mass of K2CO3

= 2(39) x 100 = 78 x 100 = 56.5 %

2(39) + 12 + 3(16) 138

%C = 12 x 100 = 8.7 %
138

% O = 100 – 56.5 - 8.7 = 34.8 %

3. Find the percent water in BaSiO3. 6H2O

% H2 O = mass of H2O x 100

mass of BaSiO3. 6H2O

= 6(18) x 100 = 108 x 100 = 33.6 %

137 + 28 + 3(16) + 6(18) 321
Finding Percentage Composition from Experimental Data

4. 2.0 g of lead are heated strongly with sulphur. The resulting chemical
reaction produces 2.3 g of the compound lead sulphide. Use the information
given to calculate the percentage by mass of lead in lead sulphide.

% Pb = mass of Pb x 100 = 2.0 x 100 = 87 %

mass of lead sulphide 2.3

5. Iron and sulphur react to produce iron sulphide. Use the following
experimental data to determine the percentage composition of this
compound.

mass of empty crucible = 30.6 g

mass of crucible and iron = 41.8 g
mass of crucible and iron sulphide = 48.2 g

mass of Fe = 41.8 – 30.6 = 11.2 g

mass of iron sulphide = 48.2 – 30.6 = 17.6 g

% Fe = mass of Fe x 100 = 11.2 x 100 = 63.6 %

mass of iron sulphide 17.6

% S = 100 = 63.6 = 36.4 %

6. Mercury (II) oxide decomposes when heated strongly producing liquid

mercury and oxygen gas. Use the data given to calculate the percentage
by mass of mercury in the compound.
mass of empty test tube = 12.25 g
mass of test tube and mercury (II) oxide = 13.68 g
mass of test tube and mercury = 13.57 g

mass of Hg = 13.57 – 12,25 = 1.32 g

mass of mercury (II) oxide = 13.68 – 12.25 = 1.43 g

% Hg = mass of Hg x 100 = 1.32 x 100 = 92.3 %

mass of mercury (II) oxide 1.43
