A. Summary of El Filibusterismo.
Juan Crisostomo Ibarra has assumed the persona of Simoun, a wealthy jeweler.
He travels the world in incognito, accumulating riches that he plans to use to overthrow
his own country's corrupt and cruel administration. Simoun, on the other hand, has a
personal purpose. He intends to revenge his father's death by rescuing his lover, Maria
Clara, from the convent. On Christmas Eve in a forest, Basilio, a medical student,
identifies Simoun as the guy who helped bury his mother Sisa under a tree more than
10 years ago. Simoun has gone into the woods to get the diamonds he buried beside
Sisa's tomb. The plotters' scheme collapses as the film proceeds, revealing all the
secrets and intrigues. A good Filipino priest throws Simoun's jewels away, thereby
eliminating the greed, violence and other evils they might have provoked.
