Meaning and definition of loan

Commercial bank as of its primary function makes lending

activity. It is apparent that loan is defined as a thing is lent,
especially a sum of money. Likewise, debt means a sum of
money owned to somebody. However in financial terms
loan or debt means principle or interest availed to the
borrowers against the security. Debt means money that
owes or will lead to individual or person. Furthet the term
loan is defined as a lending . Delivery by one party and
receipt by another party, a sum of money upon agreement
expressed or implied, to repay it with or without interest.
Anything furnished for temporary use to a person at his
request, on that condition it shall be returned or its use.
Therefore, loan includes-
1. The creation of debt by lender’s payment of or
agreement to pay money to the debtor or to a third
party for him account of the debtor.
2. The creation of debt pursuant to a lender credit card or
similar agreement. With respect to alternative view, debt
means ‘principle and interest’ provided to debtor by
banks of financial institutions, with the pledge of
immovable property or other securities of guarantee or
without guarantee and the word also means over dues of
the transcation beyond balance or fees, commission and
interest incurred in that relation.

The word ‘loan’ has been derived from the word ‘lend’
which means to give something to other. In literature,
loan is defined in many ways.
There are various types of loan offered in banking
system. The following are common types of being loan
offered to a customer.
1. Demand Loan: Demand loan is a working capital loan
provided by the bank to finance project of the
customer. It is of a revolving nature and usually given
for one year. It is liquidated at the option of the
borrower or the bank at any time prior to maturity
date. The bank may extend the facility of tenure by
reviewing the performance of borrower. Therefore,
full repayment of demand loan will be only on
following cases-
 Facility called back by the bank.
 When the customers repays the loan in full amount.

2. Time loan: when a short term loan is provided to a

customer for a period less than one year with a fixed
maturity date it is called “time loan”. In time loan,
there could be one repayment of the full amount on
maturity date or several partial repayments on various
dates.
