Nursing Interview Guide

This guide will provide you with the necessary tips, strategies, and resources to prepare you for your
interview.

Prior to the Interview


● Research the organization (i.e. mission, vision, values)
● Review the job description and highlight key skills, knowledge, and experiences they are
looking for
● Create a list of interview questions, reflect on your skills, knowledge and experiences, and
record your responses
● Practice your responses by recording yourself on your phone or computer, practicing with a
friend, or doing a mock interview with a career educator

Sample Interview Questions

General Interview Questions that help an employer get to learn more about your qualifications,
Questions skills, and experiences.

● What inspired you to be a nurse?


● What is your philosophy of nursing?
● Why are you interested in this role?
● What are your strengths?
● What do you see as your areas of development?
● Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
● What skills from your previous clinical placement would you apply to this
position?

Behavioural Behavioural questions evaluate how you will perform a job based on your skills,
Interview Questions knowledge, and experiences. Your responses help provide a clear picture of
your thought processes, and how you have handled situations in the past.
Questions may focus on communication skills, problem solving, conflict
resolution, interpersonal skills, policies and procedures.

When answering the questions below, use the ​STAR​ method to thoughtfully break
your answer down.

S​ituation​ [Tell a story about a specific situation or task you accomplished]


T​ask​ [Explain what you were trying to achieve and why]
A​ction​ [Describe the actions you took in the situation]
R​esult​ [Describe the outcome of the situation]

Example of Behavioural Interview Questions:


● Tell me about a time when you had to deal with a challenging patient?
● Tell me about a time where you had to explain a medical issue to someone
who didn’t speak your language or didn’t understand medical terms.
● Tell me a time when you had to resolve a conflict?

Situational Situational questions deal with typical questions you might find on the job.
Interview Questions Often they are specific to the nature of the work required.
● You realized you have made a medication error. What would you do in this
situation?
● During your interaction with an elderly patient, you notice bruising. The client
denies any falls or bumps. What would you need to consider?

After the Interview Do you have any questions for us? Questions to ask the interviewer.
Questions ● What are the daily responsibilities of this position?
● What is your nurse to patient ratio?
● How do you go about scheduling?
● What are the next steps after the interview?

During the Interview


● Dress in business casual and professional attire for the interview
● Take 2-3 copies of your resume and a copy of your references
● Have a notepad and pen with you to write down important information during the interview
● Listen to the questions and take time to think about your answer

After the Interview


● Send a thank you letter within 24 hours to the HR coordinator and/or interviewer(s)
● Reflect on interview questions asked and note them down for future interviews
