Integrated Science Lab 3
Integrated Science Lab 3
PROCEDURE:
1. Label beakers A and B
2. Prepare potato strips using knife and a ruler to get accurate measurements
3. Wrap potato strips in tissue to remove excess water
4. Measure and weigh each strip, feel texture and record on a suitable table
5. Place one strip in each beaker labeled A and B
6. Completely cover strip in beaker A with distilled Water and strip in beaker B with 20g
salt solution
7. Leave for 20 minutes in the beakers
8. After 20 minutes, remove strips and dry using paper towel
9. Reweigh, measure and feel.
10. Record information on a suitable table
RESULTS:
TITLE:
Strip in Solution A Strip in Solution B
INITIAL WEIGHT 5.0g 5.0g
FINAL WEIGHT 5.3g 4.6g
CHANGE IN WEIGHT
INITIAL LENGTH 5cm 5cm
FINAL LENGTH 5.2cm 4.3cm
CHANGE IN LENGTH
INITIAL TESTURE
FINAL TEXTURE
TRESTMENT OF RESULTS.
1. CALCULATE THE CHANGE IN LENGTH AND WEIGHT OF THE STRIPS.
2. TO FILL IN THE INITIAL AND FINAL TEXTURES, CUT STRIPS OF POTATO
AND PLACE THEM IN SOME WATER AND SALT WATER FOR A FEW
MINUTES. RECORD TEXTURE BEFORE AND AFTER EXPERIMENT
DISCUSSION:
1. What is osmosis?
2. Which strip had an increase in length and which one decreased in length? Give a reason
for the increase and decrease in strip lengths. Which strip became turgid, which became
flaccid?
3. What does the terms “Hypertonic, Isotonic and hypotonic” means?
4. Which solution was hypertonic and which was isotonic?
COMCLUSION:
1. What can you conclude from the exercise?
